RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread

Guys, I have a few questions prior to assembling the Vanquish.
First, are 4-40 blind nuts and bolts a must for securing the wheel pants to the landing gear? If so, I could use M4. If it is overkill, maybe I could drop to M3. What would you say about this solution?
Second, I've got the older version with the CA hinges. I guess they would work nice and, if needed, I could replace them later with, say, Robart ones?
Third, the double control horns are overkill, but a must, right?
How did you all secure the servo extensions to the tail?
Any pictures of all those areas as well as the components placement would be very useful.

Thank you all!

Nickolay

Hi Nickolay,

I've used M3 T nuts to secure my Vanquish's wheel pants but even with Locktite they do need to be checked frequently as they work loose. They are miles better than relying on the wood screws. As for the extensions, I made up 2 long leads and glued the end pieces to a short balsa piece that I glued across the fuselage at the rear. This allows me to remove the tailplanes and just unplug the servos while replugging them can be done single handed. May add a bit of weight but the Vanquish can stand it. Mine came in just under 5 Kgs.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread

I am finishing up with the Vanquish build. Have s few questions.

1. With he 21X13W Prop there is about 1/2 inch ground clearance when the aircraft is level. Is this enought?

2. I order the wrong prop, I order a 21x 13w instead of a regular 21x 13. I am using the Silver Torque motor with a a CC 120HV ESC will this be too much prop?

Thanks,

Jim

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread

Hi Dando,
Re wheel pants it depends on the wheel pants. I have one of the original 1st version kits and the wheel pants were slotted so wide I hand to use epoxy to narrow the slot. The gap was sobigthere was no room for 4-40 blind nut becuase it would have ended up half way in the slot. I am still using the wood screw as it is the only thing that will fit. Having to CA the wood after a while but it depends if you fly off grass or concrete/bitumen. I just bought 2 new wheel pants ( in anticipation of wheel pants failure, none so far) and the slot for the axle on the new pantsis very thin so permitting use of blind nut. The size of blind nutis limited by hole position and slot size, you will see what I mean when you try to drill the hole for the blind nut. This plane is a joy to land it will flare and slow right down so you can 3 point land it. its the grass that sticks in btw the gear and the pants causing loosening.

Ca hingles are fine if you install them correctly and use good quality cyano. There are some videos on you tube if you search for how to put in Ca hinges, you will never rip them out. The Ca holding your plane together will deteriorate with age before the hinged go. Make sure you seal the joints with Blenderm or Leukoflex tape or clear oracover/profilm/monokote and youll be fine.

You dont have to use the double servo horns but to save mucking around with putting in blocks etc its better to just go with them as the control surface has been designed internal for them.....this thing is electric, very smooth no vibration, you dont need to worry about ball raced horns etc which were designed for the IC 4 strokes to prevent wear and sloppy controls.

For servo ext I use some heat shrink tube (get from local electronic store) 1/2 inch wide, put the 2 leads in and silicone or epoxy to the inside of the fuse. Position just near rear opening so you can grab the exiting plugs. Have no interference as long as I used twisted leads.

Component placement depends on you equiptment motor used spinner type etc so it will differ. I have my CG 2mm forward of front of wing tube, tail at 0 deg and wings 0.6 deg. Stalls snaps and flies well for me at these settings. For my placement bearing in mind I used a AXI f3a 5330 motor and Truturn turbocool metal spinner Axi 20x13 CFprop match for this motor power box sensor switch Jeti spin99 opto(hard up against firewall),two 7.4v 1900ma thunder power lite receiver batt mounted under the servo tray either side of the rudder servo, receiver on the little slotted bridge and power box switch just in front of this. The 10s 5000ma thunder power lite pack sits as where plane balances, its just where its suppose to go behind the firewall. Fine adjustment can be made pushing it slightly forward and back to achieve CG.( use a Sig pro balancer not the finger job to balance the model).

With all this added stuff it weighed 4860g, a shock to me since the Axi 5300f3a is very heavy motor.(heaps of power though)
I have a newer version I am working on and I will use a Axi 5325/24(much lighter with slighly less power), single 7.4 lipo into a high voltage receiver which will be considerably lighter than the 5330/powerboxsensor switch version but still swings the axi 20x13. The power on the Axi F3A 5330 is phenominal, using 1/2 throttle for most maneuvres, max 2/3-3/4 throttle.

As for clearance the 21 inch prop I think if you go slightly bigger in wheel diameter it will still fit the wheel pants. There seem to be good ground clearance at 20". I used some old MK light wheels.
CheersHanns

Another note, if you decide to use the Robart style hinges, throw away the ones they include, and buy some genuine Robarts. The ones they include appear to be the same one used on the Sebart airplanes, and they get sloppy, and are not made out of a good grade of plastic. Some of them are sloppy out of the box. I changed mine over to CA hinges, like my earlier version Vanquish.

Arch: Now that you've flown the Vanquish for awhile what motor, ESC, battery, servo or radio changes - if any - have you made. How is the plane holding up.

To EF, the team pilots, and those who are pleased with their set-ups: please what wing incidence did you finally settle on for your Vanquish? I started with 0.4 deg (+) incidence but an experienced pattern competitor suggested I might increase this to 0.5 deg to dial out a little bit of nose-up trim on the elevator. I think I recall reading that someone went up to 0.6? As fussy as the stock adjusters are to work with, I would like to minimize the number of times I reset incidence so your data will be helpful here (and no I do not want to retrofit with Gators). I love the flight characteristics in the air, but feel mine is too neutral during approach & landing. CG is as suggested in the manual and correct in-flight. Thanks for any data. Dana

I used .5 degree on two vanquish both flew well from the beginning with straight up lines, no elevator coupling and about 1% aileron coupling for knife edge.

While not having flown it as much as I would have liked as I spend most of my time on my Wind S Pro stuff, the plane seems to be showing very little wear.

Thanks for confirming. I'm going to increase my wing incidence to 0.5 deg. Will leave CGwhere it is @ 7 1/8" to 181mm for the moment. Should be an improvement on mine. Dana

Does anyone know what the pole count is on the Silver Torque Motor? Has anyone use the APC E 21X13W Prop?

Thanks,

Jim

It seems that the pole count is 28. The motor should be identical to http://shulmanaviation.com/product_i...oducts_id=1790. If you count the magnets, you will also come to this conclusion :)

Thanks Arch.

Thanks for the reply Arch. I'm getting ready to start one for this year - a 2-Meter Vanquish. It's for the AMA patterns. I'll use the EF Torque motor. What do you like currently for servos, controller and batteries.

Nickolay, Thanks for the info. I have just finished my Vanquish last week and have seven flights on it. It is a nice flying aircraft. It has a few minor trim issues that I will work out in he coming weeks.

Thanks,

Jim

At the Victorville, CA competition this past weekend there were 3 vanquishes, 2 in sportsman and 1 in masters. My Vanquish took first place in Sportsman with Dick Christy's taking 3rd, he had a really cool 'Crash Immediately' switch on his tx that put the right elevator to full DOWN with no change from elevator control while the left elevator performed normally. That cost him a round and given the weather, he had no rounds to drop.

Jarvis' took 4th in Masters against some very tough competition from our D7 VP Jon Carter among others.

In Phoenix a few weeks before, Jarvis took second with his Vanquish. Congrats Jarvis!

Dick
I am using the EF F3A Torque motor with a CC 120HV ESC and Tumigy 5000mah 30C batteries. I was unable to get the APC 21X14 prop. I started using the APC 20X10 prop then switched to APC 21X13W. The 20X10 worked well, only pulled 57 amps at peak. The 21X13W worked better but not much better. With both props the batteries did not get warm. After a 6 to 7 minute flight I only used 50% of the batteries. I believed a 80 amp ESC will be more than enough. The batteries are well used, I have better than a 100 cycles on them. I got the Vanquish for sports flying. Iam well pleased with the way it flys. It has a lot to teach me.

Thanks,

Jim

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread

Jim,

The Torque is a lower Kv motor and will be happier once you get the 21X14 on it. It really needs a larger prop to truly be happy. You will get up to near 70amps with that prop and the performance will improve as well.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread

Thanks Arch for the feed back,

APC has discontunie the 21X14, I order the APC 20.5X14 but it is backorder. Until the 20.5X14 are in stock I have been using the APC 21X13W. It pulls 82amps and powers the Vanquish well. I did have trouble slowing it down to land until I set the ESC for 30% braking. Now it slows down and lands well.

Thanks,

Jim
