RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Wheel pant upgrade !
Just got my Vanquish on the bench and discovered what everyone is commenting about on the wheel pant. This wheel pant is obviously a quarter scale size pant and the axle is allot smaller causing grief because the cutout in the pant is bigger than the bolt on the axle. The cure is Dubro or Hanger9 quarter scale wheel axles. The bolt is the exact size as the cutout in the pant. All you have to do is drill a bigger hole in the landing gear and cut off the extra long axle shaft and its a perfect fit. The axel is thicker and adds about half ounce total to the gear (3.6oz per side versus 3.4 stock axle) but the strength is 10xs the factory setup. I added larger 2.75" MPI alloy wheels for better handling in the grass and some extra bling factor ! I would wait until the plane is on the bench and level to set the screw to fasten the pants. That way they are equally level. http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/o...f77af17931.jpg http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/o...888/photo1.jpg http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/o...888/photo2.jpg Flyer88 ;) |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I thought I would post the progress of my build with some pros and cons of the plane as we go.
Pros Nice graphics and good quality covering material. Build quality seems pretty light and well engineered. Carbon bits is a nice touch although pretty standard now days. Price point is fair, not great considering its a built up (we have some 2m's at the field that are $600 kits with Comp fuse, you just build up the stab and wings ...great deal!) Cons Landing gear axles are the wrong size for the pants and should be revised and the wheels are pretty cheap . Would be nice to see some quality, light wheels in the package like the Hanger 9 wheels or MK. My plane had three patches on it. One 2" x 4" patch by the landing gear and a couple pin hole patches where they missed looking for the pull/pull wire openings. Not cool for a plane like this ! http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/o...Untitled-6.jpg My fuse was severly dented behind the canopy. Had to inject water and pull out all the dents with the iron. Ive had ARF's of much lesser $ that had perfect covering jobs, and I would expect the same here. Specially for $650. Thats it for now and will report back as I progress... Cheers Flyer88 |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Hi Flyer88, for some reason, your situation does not surprise me. Have you considered sending it back for a refund? LOL, just thought I would ask............
|
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
No. Its more hassel than its worth.
I have a limited flying season and it would take too long for it to get sorted out. As long as EF is listening and starts to watch their quality control a little more. If they are nice guys maybe they will send me a shirt or hat. Flyer88;) |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
This is the mount for the ESC. Raised it up so I could get my velcro under the mount and around the batteries.
I always raise my ESC so I get cool air around the whole unit. I try to keep everything centered down the middle of the plane for balance. The ESC could have gone on the the side of the motor mount but I prefere the bottom. It would be great if they made a plate on the slanted motor mount support to put the esc....instead on the bottom of the battery tray !! Over all it starting to come together and Im really looking forward to flying this baby ! http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/o...Untitled-7.jpg |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
That plate looks heavy!

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
3/4 of an oz...... abouts
In the grand scheme of thing its nothing Baltic Birch ply |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Just put it on the scale 1.3 oz
No big deal. The good out weighs the bad. |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Agreed I was guessing close to 100g, 36.8g is minimal.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Even so, it's still a lot heavier than it needs to be, and does the weight include all the screws and spacers and grommets? Looks like something on an IMAC plane.
A much lighter option is to use nothing but a zip tie and maybe some Velcro, or a little pedestal made from a small block of balsa with a slot cut into the bottom to accommodate a zip tie, CA-ed to the motor box. These ESC's really don't get that hot with just a little airflow. |

ORIGINAL: Flyer88 3/4 of an oz...... abouts In the grand scheme of thing its nothing Baltic Birch ply I looked at your posting history, and it appears this may be your first pattern airplane. If it is not, I apologize. I've built two Vanquishes, so I've been down this road. Weight is everything in pattern. We fight to remove grams, much less ounces. There is an 11 lb/5 kg limit to be legal for competition. Further, the less weight, the less stress you put on your batteries, and the better the planes fly. The Vanquish, if you are careful, will come in around 10 3/4 lbs with mid-weight batteries (Turnigy Nanotechs). I used all stock hardware, with the exception of the wheel axles, in which case I used Central Hobbies aluminum axles to save a little over 1/2 ounce; in contrast to your adding weight. A 2-56 screw and blind nut hold the wheel pants on just fine. I am using the same speed controller you are, and I simply zip tied it to the bottom of the nose structure where yours is. There is no need to do anything more as the speed controller hardly gets warm, and the structure surrounding it allows for cooling. We cruise at 1/2 throttle most of the time, so they don't get hot. You are also not dealing with vibration, so zip ties are all you need, and they weigh next to nothing. Your batteries won't be that far up in the nose anyway to get the right cg, so you don't have to worry about that. You need to block off the bottom round opening in the cowl to get proper airflow; use some depron and foam safe CA. There is way too much inlet for the exit area for air, so blocking off the bottom cools things down. Use the shortest servo extensions you can, make sure your battery leads and motor leads are as short as possible (wire weight really adds up), and avoid the temptation to add anything you don't absolutely have to. Just my two cents. |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Hi Guys
I appreciate all the input. Yes the rest of the plane will be pretty much as light as I can get with exception of the two mods Ive done. All my wires are shortened and resoldered to fit. I build stuff to last. Zip ties just dont cut it for me, although I know they work. In Canada we don't have a weight limit for what we fly but if your FAI then I guess there is a max of 12 lbs all up.........I think ? I dont totally agree with super light, as some people like a higher wing loading compared to others but we'll see how she goes once I get her in the air. OUr field has some very good Pattern pilots including one of the top pilots on the circuit, so I should have lots of help if I have questions about trimming her up. Take care Cheers Flyer88 |

Does anyone know what name the pink color is on the Ultracoat listing for the Blue color Vanquish ??

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Just checked the MAAC rules, here: http://www.maac.ca/docs/2012/pac2011rulebook.pdf 11 lb limit, same as in the US. FAI is and has been 11 lbs Jon ORIGINAL: Flyer88 Hi Guys I appreciate all the input. Yes the rest of the plane will be pretty much as light as I can get with exception of the two mods Ive done. RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
ORIGINAL: Flyer88 Just put it on the scale 1.3 oz No big deal. The good out weighs the bad. 1.3 ozs for a simple ESC mount is 90% too much weight. No reason this mount shouldn't weigh 5 grams or less. 1/8" Honeycomb plate will function the same at less than 5 grams all up. Bob is right, a simple tie wrap would be lighter and fully functional. Also suggest a velcro dot underneath to hold it in place. Anyone know when the next shipment will arrive? |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I don't see what the big deal is about a few grams ....specially when highend composite plane are coming in around 5 kgs........
If I sneek under 11 lbs..... I'm happy.:) |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
My lightest 10s pack weighs 1106g, my heaviest is 1170 or so. The light ones are zippy compact 10s 25c 5000s, my heavy ones are still light by the standard of what's out there in 2x5s or 10s/5000/20-25c range packs and are made from two 5s 4900 power unlimited packs from F3AUnlimited. If you aren't careful about your battery shopping you'll wind up in the 1300+g range for 10s 5000 packs.
I agree with the folks here keeping your plane light makes a big difference and really recalibrates how you think about weight I know there's some stuff I need to do on my Vanquish to further reduce weight, like reducing wire lengths (the power wires are surprisingly heavy) and there's a few places where I've intentionally indulged the geek in me at the cost of about 100g, but there's no way I'd overbuild the ESC mount you've got there. My ESC is zip-tied onto the bottom of the motor mount box and has been perfectly happy and perfectly cool for well over 100 flights. Peter+ |
RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
5kg == 11lbs and high end planes come in a couple hundred grams under when built out with care.
