Safe Storage of Many LiPo's
 

Many of us now have lots of 10S packs plus a host of other LiPo's. To this point I've been storing them and carrying them around in standard Harbor Freight style charge boxes.These boxes are often in my truck, trailer, or on shelves in my garage. I assume many people are storing and transporting their LiPo's in a similar fashion. I've wondered in the back of my mind whether this is a smart thing to do from a safety perspective so here's my question. Are you doing anything special or do you use special containers when transporting or storing your LiPo's?

If you want an extra layer of safety, you can store your big packs in LiPo sacks. You can get a couple of 10S packs in each bag, so the downside is you would need several bags to hold all of your batteries. That being said, I have not had any issues with storing big packs either sitting by themselves on shelves or in cases like a transmitter case or one from Harbor Freight as you mentioned.

I store my packs in a small steel toolbox. It allows for ventilation out the lid should the unthinkable happen. I use some thin foam adhesive tape on the bottom of the box to provide some padding. A picture is attached. They only cost about $10. Some people use ammunition boxes too.

Check the rating of a LiPo sack. I think you'll find them next to useless for a 10S pack. It's a false sense of security IMHO. I do however use LiPo sacks for my little 2S receiver packs and then put them into the steel toolbox.

I store and transport my 10s packs in a World War 2 US Army .50M2 ammo box, padded with cardboard from a banana box

It accepts 3 - 4 10s LiPo packs depending on their size.

A+ on the ammo can, they seal tight !!!!!

You should not leave Lipo's in a hot car.

I use an ammo can as well. They are cheap, seal tight so no air to feed flames, and I love shopping at the surplus store.

That's the only feature I don't like about the ammunition box. When the LiPo's ignite, you may have a small bomb on your hands... [&:] If one pack was to ignite, all others would more than likely ignite.

The toolbox will contain the packs but will also allow it to vent the gasses out. One could argue that starving the fire of oxygen would put it out in the case of a tight seal.

In any case, a steel enclosure is the way to go.

BTW, I can store 6 10S packs in one toolbox.

I bought a safe when I still had lots of cans of fuel. Now I use it to store the Lipo's.
