Hi Dave,

We use 10 cell LiPo packs not Li-Ion.

Buy yourself a quality charger like the Thunder Power TP820CD or Cellpro 10XP or Power Lab. They will look after the charging and balancing.

Do not leave packs fully charged for extended periods! If you don't use a charged pack due to rain etc, discharge it back down to storage levels. The above chargers will do this automatically.

LiPo's have a very low self discharge rate unlike Nicads or NiMh cells. Simply set your charger to storage mode and it will be fine for a long or short storage period.

Go to a pattern comp and talk to some of the guys there for advice and see what gear they are using.

Regards,
Jason.

It really seems to be that easy. I have found the biggest problems I've had with lipo batteries is either leaving them fully charged, or not flying a few 'warm up' packs - you really should cycle them 5 times or so before using a lot of power.

The modern, quality chargers really take care of a lot of issues. They balance the packs, tell you when things aren't right, and are pretty easy to use.

When charging: you will likely charge two packs in series. You MUST have the battery that is plugged into the NEG lead also be on the NEG balance port.
