Two 5s packs or 1- 10s pack

I notice some manufactures making packs in our size range in 10s configurations. What are the pros and cons as compaired to using two 5s packs.

Thanks

I would think weight. You save one returning wire.

And perhaps heat?  The inside cells have less surface area to disperse heat compared to the outside cells.  This is of course true with a 5S pack, but 10S all together are a lot of cells.  Not sure if this is important however so I will defer to those in the know and pose this question to the group.

I find more pro's to the 2 5s packs, though I run both.  The two big advantages that I see to owning and running 5s packs is A) I can use them in 5s airplanes (62" Osiris for example which my son flies), and B) I've had a cell go bad and I'm only replacing one 5s pack rather than the entire 10s pack.  So there's some mix and match opportunity, though I'll admit I tend to run them and maintain them as a pair.

The weight savings of the 10s pack is very small assuming your comparing apples to apples.

After losing $300.00 on a brand new 10 cell pack with a bad cell (the vendor would not replace or repair it) I seldom buy anything larger than five cells. I am flying a 10 cell Clipped wing Cub on two 2S and two 3S packs. If there's any power loss due to resistance or weight penalty it is not apparent to this sport flyer.

Charging a single 10 cell pack is not possible with most chargers I know of

Actually I charge all of my 5s packs in pairs AS a 10s pack.  Most of the popular pattern chargers will handle 10s packs straight up and more in parallel.

Every 10s pack I've seen has two 5s balancing plugs. Revolectrix Cellpro 10s/ 10xp, Turnigy 10xc and the iCharger 1010b+ are examples of chargers that will charge 10s packs just fine.
I use two 5s packs because failure of 1 cell only requires replacement of 1 pack.

I have the chance to try both configurations using same brand. I concluded that the 2-5S tends to last longer than a single 10S packs. It was not a rigorous measurement but I got that conclusion. There is some weight savings but is minimal.

And anecdotal evidence shows that it is usually one or the other of the outer two cells that fail in a 10s pack. Why, I don't know.

Interesting... I found a source for a 10s pack at a great price... (not the nano-tech) Now I'm second guessing and may decide on going with two 5s packs... It will actually cost me about $15 to $20 more per pair for 5s packs. Building a 2M Monolog...

Didn't think about the cell going bad taking out a whole 10s pack... Great point...

Not that it matters to most of us but I also believe there is a limit to the output voltage of a pack if you are travelling on an aircraft.

Correct. The one I got is shipped with the cross conect unpluged so the battery is 5S in transit.

I would prefer 5s packs because down in the road you could mix and match packs, if some pack develops problem earlier.

I usually cut one power wire from the 5s pack shorter to save weight.
