YGE fire / Programing

Would like to know if I made a mistake or just had a faulty ESC, YGE 90HV, Plettenberg Advance 30-10.
this is the values I used with the card to program the esc.

Timing : 24 deg
Brake : Acro
cut off- slow down
batt- Lipo
cutoff voltage - 3 2
#cells 10
active freewheel -on
start up- plane middle
PWM frequency - 8khz
start up power 16%

i set the end points as described in the manual with the exception of placing the receiver in analog , I didn't know how to do this so a call to futaba and was told not needed on a 14 ch futaba. So I went ahead and set end points with the throttle 3 clicks from low to ensure the brake would work, I also set the brake about 7 clicks up or around 25%.

Power was lower than expected with this combo, it flew but seemed limited, I did hear some squealing when applying power after a down line, only flew 5 min flights, prop came loose twice and that's what I thought was squealing but apparently I had a more severe issue but failed to recognize it.

Does anything jump out as being incorrect?? I don't plan on running another YGE but would like to know if I caused my own grief. I did cycle thru the settings and double checked everything prior to putting it in the plane.

My plane received heavy damage from the fire and subsequent off runway landing from this and I would really like to know if it was self induced. Thanks Cliff

Sorry Cliff for your problem. I dont use an Pletti in connection with YGE-ESC (only Dualsky-Motors) but your Settings seemed o.k. for me.

Handling of endpoint-setting could be wrong?

My Steps for programming F3A-Brake of YGE-ESC with Opto:
  1. Disconnect Flight Battery
  2. Turn off Receiver
  3. Unplug the Command cable from Receiver
  4. Plug the second cable from ESC (ProgCard-cable) into left connector of ProgCard
  5. Plug extension cable into right connector of ProgCard and connect it with Receiver (ThrottleChannel)
  6. Turn on Receiver
  7. Turn on TX
  8. Move Throttlestick 3 or 4 clicks from below
  9. Select Acro or Acro hard (Enter)
  10. Push Throttlestick to Full
  11. Select Full Speed (Enter)
  12. Choose Throttlestickposition for brakepower (e.g. half throttle for 50% Brakepower)
  13. Select F3A-Brake LED (Enter)
  14. Turn off Receiver
  15. Turn off TX
  16. Disconnect ProgCard
  17. Plug Command cable into Receiver

Here is a link to a video for programming the YGE80, predecessor the YGE90. Settings are the same for both for the Pletty 30-10 and Pletty Advance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SruL...ature=youtu.be

I use the same settings, however, I only use the braking on landings if needed, otherwise I just use a low idle all of the time.

Hi, I had/used a YGE 90,the transition from Brake (in down line) to throttle open was TERRIBLE,sometimes I wondered if it was going to throttle up and when it did it made an AWFUL noise. Two flying sessions where loss of model seemed likely was enough for me...back to Spin 99! I now use Castle ESC.
Research showed that the problem I had was common and was supposed to have been fixed.I bought the ESC from F3a Unlimited (no disrespect to them ) and to return it to America was not worth the effort. I still have it...make me an offer:cool:.
Cheers.

Nice video Joe, I didn't see that before I sat down to program, but all the steps I followed the same with the exception of having the motor hooked to it to hear the beeping, everything else was the same,

HaHa that's just what I need, at least I would get another shot at programming , but I don't think another is in my future.

Cliff_B 08-12-2014 03:21 PM

Those are the steps I used Hans, I just did it while setting every thing up, after watching the video Joe made I didn't make any mistakes, I didn't have the motor hooked up but that is not required as per instructions. Thanks for your response

The YGEs work great as long as you don't use them for down line braking. I have several with 100's of flights on them. I did have one(YGE80) fry on me several years ago but that was because I forgot to leave it off braking when I took off. Up until now I have always flown with a very low idle and dealt with the speed increase in certain down lines. To me it was no different than flying a 2 cycle glow engine which I flew for years until I converted all over to electric.

I just purchased a couple of Jeti Mezon ESC's with the intent of using the down line braking in the future. Up until now I have managed without it. Unfortunately, our new proposed Masters sequence in the US pretty much requires it. The only real benefit of the YGE's is the lighter weight if you are in need of it.

I've seen my share of people have problems with Castle ESC's too and I just don't care for the overkill in the wire size which is a pain in the neck to solder to. So Jeti could be the direction I'm going. It's a shame that all the ESC's out there are not as easy program as that of the Castle ESC's.

Very sorry to hear this Cliff.
Scott Wait had a similar event this week (different esc), but sounds like less damage than you suffered. He is going with the Jeti Spin 99.
Let me know if there is anyway I can help.

Dan

Hi Joe.....I got rid of all my Castle ESC's and have completely changed over to OS.
They are easier to program than anything else I have used and they just work without any nonsense...no weird knocking noises....no screeching...no problems all.
The brake is very adjustable and works great....the manual endpoint setup couldn't' be easier.,,,,very smooth operation.
And....you don't need a computer to do it.

Dave,

I assume you are using the 100A ESC? What motor are you using? I am running Pletty Advances. May have to get one t play with . Seems reasonably priced too.

Silver Bullet 08-14-2014 06:53 PM

I agree with Dave H. I'm using Neu FAI motors.

Hi Joe....sorry for the late answer...been out flying Snowman's new Biside.
Yep....the OS OCA-1100HV.
I'm using the Plett Advance in the Biside, Nuance and Gaudius and there has not been one moment of problems of any kind.
The small OS programmer is a must have....very small and it stores the ESC settings and allows you to make changes in less than 2 minutes.
I completely programmed Snowmans 1100HV from the factory defaults in just seconds.
The programmer stores the settings as well so you can set up another ESC simply by downloading to the ESC on the flight line....that's what I did late this evening...of course it flew just fine.
I have a Plett EVO in the Gaudius with the 1100HV and it uses the same settings as the Advance.
There is a small instruction sheet that comes with the unit and shows how to set the manual endpoints....no weird language...just the facts....it works.
if you get the OS and need the settings...PM me and I'll get them to you.

Dave,

Great, please send me the settings. All I have is Pletty Advances. I'll be ordering one next week. The Jeti Mezon instructions are not very clear. Probably the reason why I haven't jumped into pogramming them yet.

[h=2]Hacker Master Mezon 95 is pretty reliable and trouble free. I have been using it since the beginning of this year and so far found no problem. Quite easy to program too.[/h]

The OS/Futaba works well but the Jeti Mezon 90 Lite is my choice. I like the programmable BEC that allows me to use the lightest of backup batteries that seldom need charging and I would be lost without the telemetering. I can see that my 10s is charged prior to takeoff and I can see how much I used during a flight by glancing at my transmitter. I also get an audible warning if I reach 4000 mAh. Of course I can read out many other parameters for the whole flight with a little more effort. The only catch is you need a Jeti transmitter to go with it.
