Kinda curious about this myself. Been wanting a 2m Pattern plane and had my eye on this one. I would be flying the Vanquish as a sport plane as well. What's your take on this plane? Good looking Curare 60.

Is the poles the magnets or the stator winds.? It must be the old as it doesn`t have twenty of either..It started off with the magnet retainer coming apart in it..I then had a bolt break off it in on removing...Then when when I drilled the bolt out I went through and touched the winding with the drill bit...I know bush league....Its a paper weight at this point..I liked this motor, but it was like a two stroke dirt bike...Too peaky....most likely just get another himaxx..thx..

On the Vanquish as sport flyer...Oh it rocks...It maybe a low to mid class pattern plane ,but compared to a normal plane its all that...I`m honestly a 3D guy, but with a generic setup I can even look decent.....a 2m plane makes all your other planes seem like they don`t fly straight...regards...J

I have a Q60 on mine for the last 2 seasons.......looking forward to next year..... :)

Believe it or not, but I have been using a Tacon 160 (19X10 prop) on my Vanquish and had to set my throttle curve to a max of 65% to keep from having too much acceleration on the up lines. Granted, it is a heavy motor, but I still make weight, barely. Has lasted for two seasons and has been in three different Vanquishs. May not be a top line motor, but it also uses less amperage than my Q80 in my Episode. I actually prefer the Vanquish and Tacon blend to the Hacker in the Episode. Go with what you feel comfortable with. In addition, I usually increase the percentage on my throttle curve in windy conditions about 5% and it seems to compensate all right.

Not only have I been looking at the EF 2m Vanquish I've also been looking at the Caelus 2M F3A by Top Model RC. The price on the Caelus was $999.00 but it just went up to $1100.00. Just can't seem to bring myself to pay that much for a plane. For the guys that are into Patten competition I would assume it's worth it but to me as a sport flyer it's just another plane with an expensive price tag. Back in the day I use to fly the 60 size Tiporare, Curare, and all the different flavors of the Kaos. I just like the way Pattern planes fly, that's the reason I've taken an interest in getting one. If I do buy the 2m Vanquish I'll probably go with the Silver Bullet motor.

I just picked up a Caelus..The Vanquish will be the back-up. When you think about it, composite planes like the Caelus are like grown up fiberglass pattern planes from the early '80's. Sure, the price has gone up, but in 1980 dollars what a Tipo or Curare cost back then, given inflation, it's not that far off. I just got tired of having to re-shrink the covering on the Vanquish every time I took it out to fly.

I hear ya. How does the painted fiberglass hold up under the sun? I've seen some sort of ring on the front of the cowl on some of the build threads. What's the purpose of that? Does the Caelus have one ?

The ring might be the carbon fiber motor mounting plate, for front mounted motors. Mine is a rear mount motor, a plywood mount is available. The paint looks like automotive grade...I'll bet it holds up fine.

I fabricated a mount for my Caleus, F3A unlimited now has a fire wall for it for rear mounted motors

Paint holds up if its not abused but it will chip easily. Mine looked like new after 2 years and about 1500 flights. Give the covering a good once over with an iron before hitting the sun, then once in sun go over it again especially the areas that are lifting. The covering will stay put after that. The Vanquish is a good plane. I flew mine in the Advanced class with no real issues. If your just sport flying, I doubt you will find anything better for the price. Easy to repair as its all wood and covering. I am surprised more sport flyers have not discovered it.

Thanks for the info. Once you get the motor mounted on your Caelus post a pick of the structure inside the fuse and how you mounted the motor.

If you can get 35% off a new Himax, I would do that for sure. should be the same price as the silver bullet at that point...

Update: Still haven't seen the Himax HC6330 on sale anywhere. $300.00 + shipping is a little much when there are so many other choices much cheaper. |
