Conversion of a Pattern/ Artistic Aerobat
 

Well, I am far enough along that I can post some progress. This is a 2M Artistic Aerobat from Extremeflightrc.com. Chris is not producing these as of yet but could in the future. He has many other projects going on for the RC community that this has been shelved.

I watched him fly his IC version at a funfly a couple of years ago and fell in love with it ever since. He had a second prototype and knew of my interest, so here we are.

Here is the motor and setup:
Hacker A60 18m
19X12 wide APC
Prototype Torque 90a ESC
4- JR 8411's (dual elevator and ailerons)
1- JR 8611 for the rudder (overkill)
6v UBEC
10S 5400mah Electric Power

This plane is a 2M all built up model in usual EFRC quality. The wings have a CF wingtube and the elevators use an aluminum one. The usual hardware came with the kit (CF control horns, balllinks, titanium control rods etc).

Chris even provided an extended swept back gear for electric conversion! The gear holds up fine, but any bow in it and my 19" prop gets a bit too close for comfort. I have reinforced the gear with 1/8th steel rod just to be sure it doesnt bow out.

I have no idea what this power system will do on a 19X12 yet as I have not run it up. An A50 would have been plenty at 1500 watts I am sure, but I am looking closer to 1900-2000 watts if I want to try and compete with it.

I would probably buy one.
What's going on with you batteries though?
How many packs you got in there? lol
They are odd shaped, to say the least.
What packs are you running?
What do you think the all up weight will be?

LOL Only two packs. They are 2 over 2 stick packs custom. I had to get them all the way to the firewall to get it to balance. The packs are 5S4P 5.4 ah packs. They are 7 oz heavier than they TP 5300 packs. I dont mind though since I need the nose weight.

They AUW is 11.5 lbs. About a pound heavier than I wanted it or thought is would be. The setup is pushing right at 2000 watts though, so power wont be a problem.

Careful Mike, watt readings alone on this forum without RPM will likely start an argument. Well at least that is what happens when I do it. [8D]

Conversion looks real nice, would like to see something like that available on the market. As far as weight goes, not sure about balance, but under 11 lbs would be a piece of cake with a lighter mount and batteries. But if that's what you have on hand, hey, what's the difference it's all good equipment!

For pattern type performance, not 3D mind you, and AXI 5330 would be a couple ounces lighter, and a 5320 would be about 6 ounces. Not sure about the mount but some could be lost there, and 5-6 ounces could be had with the Flight Power 3700s.

How is the Hacker motor running for you?

lol. I will try and tach it in a bit. :)

I think definately I could loose 1/2 a pnd with a few minor equipment changes. For now, this will be a good practice plane and when the time comes that time allows me to start competing, I will put in on a diet.

I havent maidened it yet as that will be this weekend. But I am pleased with the run up's that I have done. I will definately get some video this weekend.:)

I would like to see some numbers from that motor, what you have right now is pretty interesting. Videos are always good!

I wouldn't worry too much about having to abolutely remove the weight. Yes the plane will fly better lighter to a point, but most contests here don't weigh planes... only at the NATS is that really ever an issue. You'll like the plane lighter for sure, but it's not a high priority thing, IMHO.

Plane looks good, are you planning to try a couple different props with that?

Power won't be an issue... likely, TOO MUCH power is more likely an issue... is that possible? lol

The 19" is as large a prop as I can turn right now with the gear I presently have. I went with the 19X12 wide as this is supposed to give more RPM and the same power as a 20X13 APC. I am either going to get some Bolly gear or send my present gear to TNT and have them custom cut some aluminum 2" taller and keep the profile the same.

Too much power is the same as too much money...neither exist ;) I will update the thread Sunday night with video :)
