Thinking about electric in my next pattern project
 

Hello guys.

I'm considering to switch to electric power for my next pattern plane. I would like to hear from you some suggestions about the best setup that actually WORKS. I'm in particular concerned about the motor, since I came from an airplane with limited vertical power (OS140RX and a bit heavy ship), I would like to get something that is powerful at least as a YS170 - which could be the alternative power plant.

I see the common solution is Hacker C50, but I would prefer an outrunner motor. So my questions are:

1) Why the C50 is still so widely used? I would prefer an outrunner, since it is simpler - i.e. no gearbox.
2) Are there any outrunners that are appropriate for pattern flying like the C50? AXI? OXAI Dymaxion? I've seen Plettenbergs, but they are very expensive.
3) Will an electric setup yield a heavier plane? Doing a small calculation to me it seems that the two setups are almost equal, considering engine and battery (fuel)

From what I see you will need to pay attention to weight for an electric so start with a light plane. To me it looks like any of the electric setups being used competitively in pattern are close to the 1.70 ys in performance. If you consider takeoff weight they can be roughly equal in weight....or not if you consider you start at 11lbs w/ glo then add fuel.

Copy one of the setups on Chris's site, the AXI f3a and CC85 seem very common for an outrunner and not to pricey. I use the AXI f3a and Jeti 99 which works good and runs very cool.

I see in that the AXI F3A costs less than a half a Plett 30-10 EVO! Do you know why is there such a big difference? Flight performance are comparable? If not, in what the Pletty is superior?

I started this year with electrics. Best decision I have made. Hacker C50 14XL, Jeti spin 99

It was advised by Lorenz, my main supplier. I can only say it works very wel as a powerplant, from april till now I have made 150 flights with it. Only drawback is that you have to grease the gearbox after about 50 flights.

My next plane will be with a Plettenberg. The price of the Plettenberg is 419E, this is less than the price of the YS and should not be a problem.

A motor (600gr) controller (100gr) and pack (1200gr) = 1900gr. This is 200-500 gr more than a IC-setup.

I started in electric over 3 years ago. I went through several outrunners. Best decision I made for this year. C50 14XL..

If I went outrunner again, I would spend the money for the Pletty even though it's expensive. I've found that I get what I pay for.

Ciao Stek,

check out the weights: 585g for the Plettenberg against 652g for the Axi. Plus you get a much better efficiency, that means running the same RPM with lower Amps on the Pletty. But if money is important, then the Axi will certainly do. There are some electrical differences in both setups, but I'm not that much of an expert to tell what this difference really is.

Pletty's are nice ... when I got mine I was wondering why there were some dimples on the can ... then it downed on me, they balanced the can. :) I hope I am not wrong!

No you are not, the can's on a Plett are balanced. So if you ever remove it, know which orientation it was in!

What about the Oxai motor?

The OXAI motor looks great but is it only about looks? Will it be OXAI prices? I just seen the Hyperion 5025 at work and it was good enough to happily haul an Integral for a P09. Did it with ease and was under propped. Was only pulling 70A WOT, it should be pulling at least 85A.
