brushless motor for moth
Can anyone recomend a brushless for a piccolo moth

RE: brushless motor for moth
I used an astro 010 ten turn. I cut mine down fairly small and used 2 cell LiPos. Worked well, but I got short flight times. (could have cut too much)
To do it over, I would wind my own brushless motor from one of the gobrushless.com kits. http://www.vinceherman.net/rc/Moth2.jpg |

did you use the plans from heli hobby or make your own?

RE: brushless motor for moth
It was probably using similar information as the HH page. I certainly have read that a hundred times or so, along with a thousand posts on cutting blades. I did cut one set of blades with a cut recommended on the ikarus board. It was a mild cut, but proved to me that I could do it, and that there was improved performance ot be found. So I got 3 sets of blades, and I cut more. I cut each set differently and ocmpared results. I cut until the heli would not lift, and then I put on a bigger pinion. Then I cut some more.
I never did care for the DD tail though. Too much buzzing. Distracted me. Went back to mildly cut lbades and the geared tail. I un-mothed it. |

RE: brushless motor for moth
I have purchased a dozen kits, and our club wound a lot of them for various planes. The one that I wound was a moderate performer, so I probably did not wind it with identical winds on each tooth. I plan on winding 2 identical ones for a P38 I have.
But on which winds I would use for a Moth? Whatever the guys on the Ikarus board say is successful. There are a lot of people who have done that. Just ask for all the specs: - Moth blade size - Pinion - Motor style (delta or wye) - turns - cell count - cell capacity Probably the biggest holdup for me is the mounting. There are guys who can manufacture a workable solution themselves, and that is not me. When I make a mount, nothing lines up. As my brother puts it, I can use my brains, he can use his hands. |
