Thinking of getting one

Me and my son are thinking of getting a electric rc heli.We have never tried one before. We don't want to spend to much in case we don't like it.But it could be a stepping stone to a better one If we get hooked. He's 10 years old. Thanks

Frostman55,

Reading your post, and not really knowing weather you'd like the hobby or not and don't want to spend a small fortune. Also, keeping in mine your son is only 10. I concur with Burntt32 and get a coaxial heli. Blade CX2 or Lama V4.

Here's a couple web sites to check things out.

Blade CX2:

Lama V4

Oh, it is addicting,

one of the reasons it can be nice to get a HBFP (apart from being super tough and really simple and cheap to repair, but not the easiest to fly, or so "others" say :D), not for your son to fly but maybe for you, he should use a coaxial, but the HBFP comes with a sim and it uses the HBFP Tx so it'll be really helpful for practicing, the sim it comes with is suppose to be really crappy, but pm me and I'll tell you a secret about that , but yes def spend a good amount of time on a sim, it'll really help you and your son. and save you alot of money in repairs and save time of not waiting for parts and repairs.

I'm not worried about my son on it. He's a video game master,If he had a few weeks on a sim he would be awesome. I worried about me :) Thanks for telling me the HBFP comes with a sim

This is what I got and for the price its nice. Heres the cheapest price I found. One thing to consider is which of the 2 your local hobby shop carries parts for. If not you could have to wait up to a week for parts.

A common misconception that some newcomers to this hobby is that flying a model heli will be something like flying aircraft on their play station or X box. Not the same at all! I really think that you should first get a coaxial helicopter because the difference in stability between a single rotor heli, and a dual rotor coaxial is like night and day. I would get one of the co-co lama helicopters from hobby lobby, and you will have flying fun without any disappointment right out of the box, for about $99. Once you guys get good with that, then move to the single rotor, collective pitch models.

Get a sim any sim but get a sim if you are even entertaning the idea of this hobby get a sim some are free and good ( FSM) some are cheap and great ( clearview 40$) some have it all ( real flight g3 -g4 150 -200$) this will be the best investment you can make,. I would avoid the CX or any counter rotating heli ( coaxle) the avarge adult out grows them in about 3 flights and they act very little like the larger helis or a CP ( colective pitch) one. By the way the Honey bee is fixed pitch but a great noob heli its cheap other than the landing gear it tuff you will find it will come easyer to you if you get lots of extra parts for it at the time of purchase , here or the HS you get it from can uasally give you a list of items or parts they sell the most of. You want to replace the broken part and get it back in the air ASAP or you wont learn from your past mistakes, espally if you have to wait 2 weeks for new blades. Anyway this is just my 2 cents give a sim a try good luck and have fun , oh try to build on success in small increments you will be killing it in no time.. AX

As you state in your original Post, you want an r/c Helicopter that is decent to fly right out of the box, that both yourself and your son can enjoy.

To get this vital taste for this hobby (and to see if you will enjoy it), I also suggest you buy a Coaxial helicopter as a first purchase - Such as a ' Blade CX2 '.
The Blade comes RTF (Ready To Fly), requiring you to only charge the battery at most, before you are able to get this Helicopter into the air !!

The Blade CX2 is reasonably cheap, and can be configured and upgraded (if you so choose) making it more fun and exciting to fly.
It is more suited to indoors (meaning you can fly it ANY time), however with a few modifications, can be flown outside in minimal wind.

You cant get better "practice" than by actually flying a Heli, as compared to practicing with simulator software, which will never give you that same experience!

All the best with your first Heli - report back with what you go for :)

like others have said... get a co-axial heli to start with. this will allow you both to learn orientation and get the basics of flight down before moving to a single rotor heli.. also get a sim.. real flight G4 is great but it's expensive. FMS is free... and looks and flies like crap. Clearview is a great sim.. and a lot cheaper than many others. Another thing you'll want to get is batteries.. the more batteries you have, the more time you spend flying. a great place for batteries is [link=http://www.hobbycity.com?cda=28767]Hobby City[/link] . more than anything, you need patience and determination. this is a great hobby and there are a lot of very helpful people here and at other sites that are more than willing to help you with any question you have.
