ESC and Gyro problems

I recently bought this picolo w/separates from ebay. It has the following mods:

-Orion Coreless Elite Mod (8T Pinion)
-CSM HLG 200 Heading Hold Gyro
-GWS 6 Channel Rx (Futaba)
-Eflight 10A ESC for Main Motor
-ICS 50 For Tail Motor
-Brass Tail Boom (Custom Mod)
- Ball In Swash Mod Aluminum Hub Cut Blades

Problem #1
When I hit the throttle, I get no response until about half way, then the blades spin super fast (almost at full throttle speed) Because of this I don't think that I will be able to hover since the heli immediately takes off towards my shins before I cut the power.
Is this happening because of main ESC is 10A? or is it because the motor is too powerful? Please help me with this because my heli has either full on or full off.

Problem #2
I originally thought that the tail motor was dead because I didn't get any response from it either. After playing with the controller, I noticed that I had to hold the stick full left for a few seconds so the tail ESC could initialize.
My question is: Is it possible to get the tail to initialize without having to hold the stick to the left when I turn the heli on?

ESC and Gyro problems

#1 What TX are you using? is it a computer TX, does it have a throttle curve set.?

#2 No, that is how it works and you have to live with it. The ESC was never designed for a heli tail. It thinks that full left rudder is "zero throttle on a plane". It needs to see zero throttle to initialise - a safety feature. If it were on a plane you would not want it initialising on anything other than 0 throttle, else you would chop your fingers off!

I use the same tail esc. It's fine.

Radio

Thanks for the reply.

I just have a plain old Laser 4. I do have an RD6000 that I haven't set up yet though. Do you think that that is the problem. I thought that you could use that set-up without a computer radio.

If it is an FP pic then the 4ch will be fine. I was just checking if you had a computer TX if your throt curve was wrong.

ESC and Gyro problems

It sounds like your main ESC may be bad. You could try plugging it into a different channel on your receiver to test if it is a problem with the throttle channel on your TX or RX.

ESC

One thing that I forgot to mention is that the motor is still somewhat proportional. The power just doesn't kick in until the upper half of the throttle range.

I will try plugging into another channel. Which one should I plug it into?

Any other channel that you know is working right, perhaps the rudder channel.

Do you mean that the rotor doesn't start turning at all til half throttle, or that it just doesn't have enough power to lift off til half throttle?

Have you tried adjusting the throttle endpoints on your Laser 4?

ESC and Gyro problems

Yeah, the rotor doesn't turn until half throttle. I don't think that it is the EPA because the radio works fine on my IFO and on my SKYLARK. I also tried my RD6000 with the same results.

Oh yeah, I tried plugging in a new receiver with the same results, so I will try to swap out the ESC tonight.

AHHH HAAA!!!!

I finally figured it out!!! It was that damned ESC. I just popped in a new ESC and everything works perfectly. Thanks for your help everyone.
