hey thanks for the help everybody. i think ill definitly take your advice chippedprop and put some hing pins in it if my hobbystores got some that will work. im glad i dont need to get a whole new airframe i can just fix this one. just to clarify, i didn't have to cut off any of the trailing edge of the elevon i just trimmed the frays off the front of the elevon where it meets the wing. thanks again

NIGHT FUNJET!

150 VERY bright LEDs. Red, Green, Blue on top and Orange underneath. I just finished this plane today to try some Funjet night flying. I'm using an old Align Trex 450 motor which has horrible power. I might be getting 60mph if I'm lucky... Nothing like my other MicroDan powered 125mph Funjet. Visibility with this arrangement of LEDs was easily seen in the night sky. Only when it is coming straight at me is it difficult to see. Total weight is 23 ounces.

Here's a video of a flight:

Yet another Funjet.

I am going to try 3 different motors. Mega 16/25/3, HET 2W 20 and a Microdan. I glued the first and second hatches together so it all comes off in one piece. It makes it really nice; you can get to everything really easy.

I used CF from tip to tip.

I also ran 2 long CF flat strips lengthwise underneath the 3M Extreme to act as long skids for landing on pavement.

Here are some specs from runups with the HET 2W 20.

Prop APC 4.75 x 4.75

3S 30C Loong Max 51 Amps

4S 25 Flight Power EVO 25C 62 Amps

4S 3E Model 20C 72 AMPs Only for 1 - 2 seconds. I will smoke this battery for sure

Anyways, at 72 Amps it's cranking. It's kind of scary.

rino, I would highly recommend trying the skid tape from hobby people. It's the stuff the rc car guys used to protect the bottom of their chassis. Just stick a thin strip on the bottom and it lasts forever.

I will probably switch over to the skid tape as soon as I can get ahold of some.

My first 3 flights were really nice. The CF skids worked wonderfully for landing on pavement. Not even a mark on the foam. The 3M Extreme tape worked too but will need to be replaced a lot.

The performance is great. At WOT the Funjet doesn't need a lot of control throw. I had to turn down the stock rates and dial in about 40% expo and it turns into a real gentle handling plane. My CG was just a tad on the nose heavy side.

I wouldn't even think about flying this at over 100 mph without some expo. I also set up dual rates for blindingly fast rolls while going vertical.

At 22 oz, this bird flies really nicely. But, I want to go about 140 - 150 now so here we go. It's going to get heavier. I'm probably in the 125 - 135 range and the stock elevons work very well.

All around, this is a very well designed and well thought out kit.

Hi Guys,

Need some help deciding which set up to go with.

medusa 28/40-2500kv or microdan 2800kv motor
Need to buy a controller so which one would be good. How is the quality on the trunigy 80amp esc?
4s 2500 30c lipo. Tp or PQ
Which prop for easy hand launch.
Will be very happy with 110- mph speed.
looking for not too heavy a setup, would like some slow flying too.

Will a 2200-2500 4s pack be ok with the motor combo. Some one told me the battery pack would be on its upper limit of discharge and its life would decrease pretty soon.
Would like a set up which does not run too hot. We anyway fly in high ambient temperatures close to 35c

Thanks
Chaitanya.

I love my MicroDan 2800kv. I have a 4s2500 35C Hyperion pack. With a Zagi 5x5 prop I clock GPS speeds of about 115 on average. I'm pulling 41 amps at full throttle.

I've custom ordered a slightly higher kv MicroDan in hopes of gaining another 5-8 mph. Those Microdans run great and don't get hot. I fly in Arizona... 115 degrees at time. No issues.

If you want to go 115 stay light and use the MicroDans. You will be in the 40 - 50 amp range so no need for a heavy controller or huge battery. It's pretty obvious that 110 - 115 is sort of a boundary for this airframe and to cross it you need to really crank up the power. I'm probably getting 130 - 135 right now but it costs about 30 more amps on 4s. The power curve is a cubed function so it takes a LOT more power to go a little faster.

40+ amps for 115 mph is a really resonable setup both cost and power wise.

If you want to do 150 mph then TT Gryphon or some of the other guys out there. That's a different thing altogether. But, make up your mind ahead of time because the setups and flying characteristics are different for each.

By the way, typically an 80 amp controller will weigh about 1 oz more than a 45 or 50 amp controller. A Castle Phoenix 45 is an excellent choice for a controller that you can push in bursts to 60 amps and only weighs 30 grams. A Castle 60 and 80 weighs 60 grams (2x more). Those extra ounces count when you don't need them.

Hi Dennis,

What kv did you order? I am going to do a Dans powered Funjet still. I want to know how your next one works out.

After talking to Dan 2900 KV with a 5x5 sounded pretty optimal. What are you going with?

I'm doing the 2900kv version.

BTW, I didn't forget about your CNC MicroDan motor mount for the Funjet. I'm swamped preparing products for the 2009 IRCHA event next week.

Here's the CNC G10 MicroDan motor mount for the Funjet. It's lighter than the stock Multiplex mount and allows MUCH more airflow through the motor. Cut from .094" G10-FR4. Motor thrust is not adjustable but I've not found it to be an issue.

if there is a demand for them I'll consider putting together a mount kit you can buy on my web store.

Rino I'll be sending yours out tomorrow.

I would suggest you go with the MicroDan custom 2900kv. It's designed for more power, better/lower resistance=more power to the prop less wasted heat.

Medusa has announced they are getting out of the airplane rc motor market.
Turnigy 80 is Ok. Check with Micro Dan as he sells Scorpion brand which are VERY good.

Lipo's I use Zippy and turnigy brand from hobby city china, 4 cells, cheap but boy do they work...read the customer reviews on each battery. Aim for a 25 to 30 c rated. They release power faster and will not over heat. I use 2650 ma size ( one is on the way as I type)

Prop APC 4.75x4.75 to 5.0 x5.0 ....make sure you balance them if you don't know how I'll post a link.

You should weigh in at 21 to 22 oz with this set up. You can expect level speed in the 110-115 range 120 + in dives.

You can run the plane wide oped and the motor will be 1 to 2 degrees hotter then air temp.
Microdan motors are made to exceed 200+ degrees temp.....which you DO not want to do.

Below is a link to my FJ. Watch the slow speed pass....no camera or edit ticks.

http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/Chipp...t-to-Music0001
You see in the video just how streamline I have made the plane. It is very evident on the landing as plane has been gliding with no power 1-2 seconds before I can find it in the air.

Nice job on the mount. I love when rc guys think outside the box to make it work or "Git er done".

Check the rite wing mount MicroDAN sells. You can mount it flush out top of the wing and lose the plastic ring and the rear canopy. Check my video to give you ideas on how to streamline and speed up your plane.

I'm not sure of the brand but I get them from Trick RC. They are used on Zagis. They are a bit noisier than APC props but I find I get more speed from them. they are 5x5 carbon reinforced plastic.

Hi CP,

I would like to go with your set up, could you tell me what motor i should ask Dan to ship me. could you give me a list of other items i need to order from Dan like motor mount, prop adaptor, prop nut ect, so i could order all in one shot.
I have a C.C. 45amp esc lying with me would that be enough or would be on the limit drawing 40amps at full thrust.(sorry new to electrics). I would also need a BEC for a 4s lipo if i use the C.C. which BEC should i order from Dan, or is it simpler to just get a new ESC if so which one for this setup.
I would be going with the stock fj, dont mind a few mph less but would the 1234 gone verticals like you mentioned earlier.
Would order the lipos you mentioned from H.C.

Thanks guys for all the help.

Chaitanya.

1- The elevon should only go back on in one direction due to the angle cuts on each end. Just in case look to see if the both elevons look the same...angles etc.
2- closely look at the the wings is one bent up or down?
3- look for twist in the wing that impacted first.
4- reset up the elevons...zero out all trim. reset as the first time as in the build.
5- check the fins. Look for loose and /or cracks. Pull them gently to see if you can move or bend them.
6- does your fuse. have a curve in it?? up or down left or right. If yes, time to retire.
7- check the angle of the motor look if it's pointing to the right a little. looking from the rear towards the nose...(your other right)
8- check the servos power on, full motion hear any grinding/skips. Power off check by hand gently and slowly move them...feel any thing??
9- did you tape the elevon gaps. I use electrical tape on the top of the wing. Full down... apply tape slowly move up by hand and fit the tape into the crease of the gap.
10- did you match up the elevon same contour as the left one...is the replaced one to high or to low in relation to the trailing edge vs the other side.

I have had this on a Stryker after a crash and I finally had to retire and re build. Crashes are wierd. Some times damage may show up a couple of flights later.

Look real close and do a good CSI on the plane. Something is out of wack.
Oh did you replace the prop it may have issues

panzer,

A CC 45 is an underrated controller. It will do 45 - 50 amps continuous with no cooling. I have put up to 75 amps through mine. That's where the CC 45 really starts to get hot.

On my 3D birds 50 amps doesn't even get it warm.

Dennis,

Got the mount. Looks great.

OK, I flew the FJ on the second of three motors today. This time is was a Mega 16/25/2 with a 6x5.5 APC on 4S. Gryphon should be proud that I bought his favorite motor.

With this setup it's faster than the HET 2W 20. The motor was just warm so it handled the amps just fine.

The airplane was fast on the HET 2W 20. It was a blur on the Mega. The acceleration with the 6" prop and the speed is crazy. And, I haven't even tried a 35C 2600 pack yet. I also plan on going to a 6x6 or a 6.5x6.5 prop to crank up the watts.

Anyways, this plane is really really fun. I can't image how fast it will be with more battery and prop.

How fast can I go before the foam explodes???
