Yup
The design reduces air flow which is why I started this thread. Take long close look at the remodel pics. The results are a much improved plane.
Vert. it just digs in and goes straight up.
With the motor in the air stream it runs cold which = more power.
The largest prop I run on the e-flite 2700kv is 6x5.5 and the motor is bearly warm.
You should try it. I remodeled one for club member and he can't say enough about the diff. Promise it works.

Always check your flight controls every time. I have only been flying 3 years. I'm self taught on a Stryker which is why I'm good at modifying planes. I either had to mod. (repair) or don't fly.
On a high speed plane make yourself fly at a min. of 100ft off the ground--until you get exp. flying.
I use high and low rates. Low to fly --high to land. On the Mod. FJ on low rates landing it runs out of control--not enough movement on the elevons to control.
High rates I can- on a good day- land with in 10 ft of myself.
I had to learn to think jet. Big sweeping turns. Long approaches with no power.
I still will put the FJ in a vert. climb go till almost out of site. power off-trim to glide and cruise around and grease a landing. Always land into the wind if you can.
I'm sure you know all of this but I didn't and had to crash and rebuild at else 8 times -that's 8 new stryker bodies ( I'm a SLOW learner)
Until I got it right.
Just remember the throttle does not have to go wide open 100% of the time you can fly slower

Yesterday's results on my Mega 16/15/3 and HET 2W23 on 5S and 4.7 x 4.7 APCe were too hot. Far too hot. Last day I will fly before my holiday is tomorrow so needed a setup to give me that last good dose of RC fun before I go.

So today I purchased a Mega 16/15/4 and an array of APCe props. Much coooooler numbers.

Mega 16/15/4 on 4.7 x 4.7 APCe and Flightpower EVO 20 5S3700

Run 1
18.21 Volts
34.6 Amps
0631 Watts
31500 RPM

Run 2
18.03 Volts
34.3 Amps
0619 Watts
31110 RPM

Mega 16/15/4 on 5.5 x 5.5 APCe and Flightpower EVO 20 5S3700

Run 1
19.09 Volts
43.0 Amps
0821 Watts
31350 RPM

Run 2
18.90 Volts
42.5 Amps
0804 Watts
30990 RPM

Going to refit the 16/15/3 and try on a small prop for comparison.

Mega 16/15/3 on 4.5 x 4.1 APCe on Flightpower EVO 20 5S3700

Run 1

18.07 Volts
61.5 Amps
1112 Watts
41190 RPM

Run 2

17.92 Volts
60.6 Amps
1088 Watts
40890 RPM

The low warning light on my Hyperion 80A ESC started flashing indicating I was within 0.2V of LVC. And this was on the first very short test. It goes solid red at LVC. So this combo is a no go on my current packs. I'll get a couple of EVO 30s in the near future.

So it looks like the 16/15/4 on 5.5 x 5.5 APCe to start with tomorrow and I'll try the 4.7 x 4.7 as well. Unfortunatley I don't have anything to test thrust with a pusher. Video and write up on flying experience tomorrow afternoon (GMT).

That is all good advise. As soon as I get my DX7 programmed the way I want it, things will be much easier. Oh yea, and practice, practice, practice.

Turned up for flying and found that the nuts had come off the end of my servo adjusters. Fortunatley couple of club mates helped me out and I got airborne. Stupidly forgot the video camera, sorry, but it flew very quickly. There was a brisk wind and knowing the distance between 2 tree lines and my time between them at 4 seconds we think downwind speed was 140+ and upwind was 120. Next attempt will be with a 5.5 x 5.5 APCe to see if there's more speed to be had but it was nice and quick as it was. Hitting the beach next week so I'll take some video there. Mega 16/15/4 + 5S3700 + 5 x 5 APCe + 80 OPTO ESC + 740 4.8v Nimh = WINNER!

ditchit ... I am really gonna blame you for this one. Looks like next week I shall be going to the LHS to buy a FJ, ITS YOUR FAULT!!! I got the Mega 16/15/3 for my MJ and I think the MJ is boring now, I cannot do much as the fuse is too narrow. With the FJ I can use my EVO25 4S 2,500 turning an APC 4.7 x 4.25 giving me a pitch speed of 155 mph and only pulling 43A.

Well today was a OK day. Stripped a servo in my Mach Racer...but BARELY managed to land YEAH!!!
OK I'll switch to the FJ tossed it up and the wind helped it roll over onto it's back..and you know what's coming.....one side of the brain is yelling PUSH...and the other side is yelling- PULL-- I pulled
***CRASH***[:@]
So I'll use the new fuse to transfer all the exp. on this one. I could repair- but this is the 3-4 crash and the 2nd with bad damage.
I'll check all the ele. stuff and if OK will rebuild---again
At least I know what I need to do

Chip - sad to hear what happened, that is why for all the small jets I always bungee, much more reliable. Some frens seem to toss with a last minute wrist twist! Hehehehe ...

chippedprop,

Sorry to hear about your crash.

Not to make light of the crash, but at least the next build will go quick and you can pretty much copy your good design again in a fraction of time that it took you last time....no more head scratching and figuring things out and wondering what if this or what if that.

chippedprop, If you are interested I can lend you my extra motor to check it for a couple of weeks.
It is a MEGA 16/25/2 2650KV and you can feel free to push some amp through it with 3S, 4S or 5S.
It can power you to past 150 MPH in a stock profile Funjet in level flight with no wind. Yours is even more aerodynamic.

I know your motor survived the crash, but I was wondering if you wanted to try a different motor.
If interested send me a PM.

Later buddy,

Gryphon

I had a few flights before holiday and when anyone else hand launched for me I got a roll to the left as soon as it left the hand which I caught with a little right aileron BUT on holiday I had 3 failed hand launches which busted up the nose badly. Repairable but I'm not going to launch myself any more. Too high risk. Will fit a hook so I can bungee.

ditchit - on my MJ I will just glue a piece of lite ply to the bottom and then use a screw as the hook, it works fine. Am getting my FJ tomorrow or on Tue ... will get her up ASAP, can't wait to see how fast she goes on 4S.

chippedprop: My E-Flight 2700 BL gave out on me this weekend after only 7 or 8 flights. Have you ever had one go out on you before? Since it went out, I'd like to upgrade to a Mega motor. It sounds like the 16/15/3 motor is very popular. I am not looking to go over 100mph just yet though, but having the potential to would be cool. I have several 3s LiPo batteries around so that is most likely the battery I would run most often. Any thoughts?

Only ''VRRROOOOOOOMMMM!''

5S + 5 x 5 = SCRRRrrrruuuggggGGHGGGGGGHHHHHHH BBBBBbbrbrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeoooooooo ooowwwwwwww

So damn fast the leading edge of the elapor was melting.

Bad weather yesterday. Will take some video tomorrow if don''t get disaster on hand launch.

You'll like the FJ Tianci...only issue is launching consistently then it's fun to trim the foam, try different motors and packs and props for ultimate speed.

What would you prop the Mega 16/25/2 with on 3s,4s and 5s? I tried running a 16/15/2 with 4s proped with a pylon 4.5x4 and it was so high pitched, sound was scary, but speed was not impressive at all. I was thinking of going 25/2 or 25/3. On 4s the 15/2 with that prop wants to cut out at first launch over half throttle. Once it runs a couple laps its okay but the batteries come down too hot for my liking. I was wondering if the 25/2 or 25/3 would do better and run cooler on 4s and 5s. Any help would be appreciated. I''m trying to create a really fast funjet that will keep up with the Neu 1110-1 without destroying my CC80 and TP batteries. Thanks in advance.

Jim

I would like to get your opinions on this combination:

Mega 16/15/4 combat version,
Castle Phoenix 60amp ESC,
Medusa 2amp 6v BEC,
6x6 or 6x5.5 APC sport prop.
4s Flight Power LiPo 25c

What do you guys think? Does everything seem like it will work well together? I am just looking for about a 100mph plane.

1110/1Y 5000KV or 1110/1D 9200KV? I assume 1110/1Y on 3S.

You said “NEU 1110-1 without destroying my CC80 and TP batteries”.
Please give me full specs on your battery.
What prop do you use, have you had a wattmeter reading?
If you have the resistance value of your motor, I can use that for comparison, the NEU sites does not list them all.
http://www.neumotors.com/20061222/1100_series.html

I’m glad that you are looking at 480 sized brushless motors to make good power.
The 400 sized motors are o.k. but somewhere after 30A-40A more and more of a case can be made to go with a bigger motor.

For very high flight speeds a very small prop with high pitch speed is not a great combination.
Pitch speed is fine but if the prop cannot make enough thrust to overcome the needed drag at high speed it is all wasted. It is like a race car dragging an open parachute while doing a burn out down the length of the track.

Prop pitch speed = RPM X Pitch /1056 {pitch in inches}

16/25/2 2650KV can spin an APC E 5X5 at 38,000 RPM 81.5A with a full 5S-3300 25C pack.
This prop or 5.25X4.75 should do very well on a funjet.

3700min to 3850+ 25C cells will be best for 4S, or 5S.
Of course smaller cells can be used and motor will be propped accordingly.

For 3S we run 4500 cells, I use 3S-5000.

Later,

Gryphon

Guy ... I will be going with my Mega 16/15/3 on 4S but today I was teasing one of my pals who picked up one, told him let''s race. Now he tells me he is going 6S! I think he will burn something or crash it. It got me thinking. I have one of the Electrifly Ammo motors, its a 28mm x 56mm I think, only 2,300KV ... any good for 6S? Heheheheee ... but motor is rated for 600W only with a burst of about 1,000W. I can always use 2 of my 3S 2,170 packs.

It has been done Tianci. There''s a nice vid on YouTube of a couple 6S powered FunJets. Will try and track it down when am not blocked by firewall at work. I'm using 5S3700 packs and it's a dog to launch. A 6S3700 pack would not fit without carving out some foam. If my FJ survives a few more flights I may well try it. I can't have you beating me on setup. No way jose [>:]

Ditchit - look at the chart above ... I hope my input was correct ... I am only thinking and am ready to burn some stuff. Actually, if the calc is correct then I can run it on my Flight Power EVO25 3S 1,800s. What do you think? The 1,800 packs will let me have a lighter wing loading. I am just being stupid here ok ...

Anyways have a good day at work, I am just done with work and am off to the field, my FJ is with me now. Anyways, she is No. 2 ... here is the pic of No. 1 with my No. 4 MJ ...

I''m no expert with the numbers Tianci but what I can tell you is that you will go to sleep flying the FJ on 3 cells. It''s very sedate with that type of power. If you want adrenaline you gotta go 16/15/3 and 4S or try a 5S/6S setup.
