Default Kyosho T-33 Shooting Star Motor

I have a Kyosho T-33a Shooting Star edf jet that I have decided to build with a 4S set up. I would like to know if the HET 2W-20 motor that I have on hand will be too much power for the stock DF-1 fan unit or will the stock fan be ok as is? Should I look for another 75mm fan as a replacement and, if so, where do I find this fan?

I don't know about your motor but I use a Mega 16/15/3 which is max out at 30amps on 3s lipo with a 3000 kv rating. It fly's very nice on this. Maybe you can compare your motor to the Mega. I don't think there is any need to go to a different fan unit.
On the stock brushed motor the T-33 barely flew. I tried 10 cell ni-mh and wrecked the motor.

Where do I get the Mega 16/15/3 now a days? I think the company in the U.S. is out of busisness except in CZ.

Sorry but I don't know any sources unless you can find somewhere with old stock. I'll been trying to buy a friend's that he had in his T-33 when the wing came off and crashed but he will not sell it. It was a really good motor. I am going to try a hobby city 3900 kv motor in my second T-33 someday. I will have to watch that it is not to hot for the fan unit.

I believe it is 3.2mm or 1/8 inch.

Ok. Then that rules out a possible E-Flite BL-15 ducted fan motor.

I have this T-33 Kyosho jet. I am running 2 parkzone 1800 mah 11.1 volt lipo batteries in it, inparallel. I am using a E-flite power 15 3600 kv EDF motor. This motor will bolt to stock fan mount. I am using the stock Kyosho fan, with a airplane style colet, with set screws, and aluminum screw on nose cone. I had to use an airplane colet because the E-Flite motor shaft was bigger. I also used it because I had it on hand at the time. I pull about 38 amps on the watt meter. "with stock fan" I am running a Jeti 60 amp speed control. I put the speed control in the cavity in front of the fan to keep it cool. I usedVelcro to hold it in place. With this set up and the speed control in the middle of the Jet and 2 batteries with Parallel cable. I did not have to usebalanceweight, it was perfectly ballanced. I can fly in heavy wind with no affect on the Jet. If I would have of bought the power 15 Fan set up, I could have run the 4 cell batteries. With the stock fan it pulls too many amps for a 4 cell set up. So if you really want to run the 4 cell set up, get the power 15 complete fan and motor package and you will be fine. I can out run gas planes with my set up at this time. We had a war bird event at our club in Cottage Grove Oregon. We had a Warbird gaggle and flew 25 airplane's at one time. I could out run them all, except 4 of them. I am very happy with my T-33 Jet. I also have a buffer, I am under the power rating so I do not worry about it over heating. I am pulling 38 amps 630 watts.I hope I have helped you.

Thank you
Greg

Greg,
Will that 69mm E-Flite fan set up be too small for the T-33, if it is to replace the larger stock fan?
Also, did you make improvements to the jet's air intakes by sanding off the inner edges? Did you do any improvements to the thrust ducting?

Hi, the E-Flite fan has one more blade with less pitch than the stock T-33 fan. The stock T-33 fan has more pitch than the E-Flite fan. So what happened in my case, I could not run a 4 cell battery set up. It would run hot with too many amps, which would burn up the motor. I think both fans are 69 mm. But I am not sure. The manual is inJapanese, I could not tell you which fan it is. It may be a 70mm. I think the E-Flite unit will fit because it is 69 mm. It should not be a problem. I cleaned up the inside of the duct with sand paper, I also cut a channel for the wires. But I left the esc out in the open inside to get the best cooling. I thought you would like to see a better motor than the one I used. Gotowww.ejf.com click on brushless motors, then click, Littlescreamers then click Jet scream 1400 motor. This is the motor I will use in my next 70mm jet setup. Here are the specs for the Jet scream 1400. This motor will fit in the T-33 with more power than you need. You can run 4 cell and not worry about burning the motor up because it is a 5 cell motor. I hope I have helped you.
Thank you
Greg

Shaft diameter is 3.17mm
Motor diameter is 35mm and mount is 28.8mm
Motor Kv is 4000
Motor Watts using 3S is ~1000W
Motor Watts using 4S is ~1400W
Motor Watts using 5S is ~1800W

Thanks Greg for your Help! Do you think that 1400 watts from the jet screamer may tear up the stock Kyosho Df-01 fan?

Oh, Did you round off the outer edges on the intakes?

I did not do any thing to the intakes they are good enough, in my opinion. The stock fan is made of a tough plastic I think it would hold up. I did glue the elevator servo in place. I used the servo tape that came with the kit, and glued the corners of the elevator servo. It was moving because the push rod was sticking where it went by the fan. I had a extra long 2 foot long 440 push rod that I rolled and glued sand paper to. I used it to sand the passage by the fan, so the push rod would not get stuck.

Happy flying
Thanks

Hi, I forgot to tell you but you can fit two Zippy Flightmax 2 cell 40C 4000 mah in series in the nose of the T-33. In series that would 14.8 volts. They fit perfect side by side. The best part of that is they are 25 bucks a piece from Hobbyking. I have flown it with a different motor and this set up. Thus burning up the motor due to over amping it. With the right motor this battery combo works good. Make sure and buy a good watt meter and you will save a lot of money. I had to learn the hard way, but I feel much better now.
Thank you

Thanks again Greg!!
The 2S batteries in series make up 8000Mha total! that's quite a bit of flight time there and I'm sure it is much lighter than trying to use a single 14.8v 8000Mah pack!

What ESC would you recommend for two batteries in series together with the Jet Screamer 1400 motor? Did you cover your T-33 with MonoKote or paint it?? Can you give a pic??

I forgot to ask you if you are flying the T-33 with the tip tanks? I have read that if you use a brushless set up of at least 400 watts, you can fly with the tip tanks on the wings!
Before brushless motors came out, the stock brushed AP-29 Le Mans motor did not have enough power for the tanks so they were just used as a static display on the model.

If you have a 2W20 then get yourself an HET6904 fan unit, this will give you 750w on 4 cell packs, a good 3200 4s1p 30c pack will provide great performance and decent run times.

The HET3W15 Typhoon is the same as the MEGA, on 4 cells in the 6904 fan unit it pulls around 38A for 1kg thrust, the 2W20 in same fan around 50A for 1.3+kg thrust.

Outrunners are generally less efficient in fans compared to inrunners, their saving grace is they can take in lots of power without burning up, but in general you will find better rpm vs watts when using good quality inrunners. Stick to your HET motors and either an HET fan or Wemotec fan, you should be able to make these fit the airframe fairly easily.

I usse a Kontronik Fun 400-36 on 3S in my KY's. Just over 500 watts - flies like it's on rails.

Drop in fit for the stock fan which is 75mm.

Hi, yes I have the wing tip tanks on it. I wasdisappointedthat they were not painted out of the box. Test your paint before you paint the tanks. The TopFlite luster cote will melt the foam. I am using the short cans of Krylon, they say short cuts on them. The red is Red pepper. It is a perfect match. I do not have the blue can any more, sorry I do not remember which color it was. It was a perfect match also. I glued the wing tips on with silicone, that way the tanks will come off in a hard landing. Tall grass at the edge of our airfield will get caught in the corners by the wing if I land at the edge of the field. I used 3 inch wide paper tape to cover the elevator where the red wave pattern is. I centered the paper tape over the the wavey pattern. I then traced it. I then took the tape off and cut it out. The tape then had two perfect patterns. I wrapped the tape around the tanks rightboughtwhere they mount to the wing. You can match the the two pieces of tape so your pattern matches on both sides. I then used a pen to make my pattern in the tanks. This way I had a perfectly matching tank. I hand painted the tanks. I can see the T-33 better with the tanks on. The red and blue really stand out. I think with the power I am running, I would not even notice if I had them on or off. I like the look of them on, it makes the plane look better. When you use 2 2cell 4000 batteries in series you are only going to get 4000 mah out of the battery. When youdoublevoltageyou keep the same mah. When you use two batteries and keep the same voltage youdoublethe mah.

I wish I could see it fly, but you are on the eastcoast, I am on the west

Happy flying
Thank you
Greg

The stock Kyosho fan is 75mm OD and I think the HET fan will be about 6mm short. Can I use a 2W-20 motor with the stock fan or will it draw too many amps?

Hi, I was on line at RCU 2 days ago and there was a Kyosho T-33 here. It is listed under Jets, if you click the electric motor option you will find it faster. It was new in the box for $175. I scattered my fan in my T-33, the stock fan will not take 700 watts for very long. I got about 30 flights using 732 watts on the meter, my fan went through the shroud and through the side of the jet.

Hope you find a new one.

Thank you

I have upgraded my Kyosho T-33 to a E-Flite power 15 fan system. I am using a 4000mah 4 cell lipo with sixty amp speed esc. I can fly for about 8 to 10 minutes. I have over 50 flights on the new motor and fan. The old bird will not quit. I am really happy with this one. The old stock fan just did not hold up to the power I had. This was a good choice for a upgrade. The price was good too.
