What large EDF unit makes the most thrust?
 

Hello

I have a old kangeroo jet that I had a wild idea of converting to EDF, who's edf unit makes the most thrust? The ram 750 mounted on it had a diameter of aprox 120.00 MM. With the edf mounted on the pedestal I am not liminted on size of the unit (with in reason) and I have a giant area for lipos so the sky is the limit. All you edf guys please give me your imput no matter how wild or crazy.

There are many different 120mm EDF systems on the market now. They range in price, quality, and assembly. One example is the [link=http://www.xtremepowersystems.net/products.php?cat=33]Dynamax Xtreme PRO 2 fan system[/link] from XPS. They also sell a mating nacelle if you want to hide the DF unit.

Extreme R/C in Australia has a series of [link=http://www.extremerc.com.au/estore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=146_72_298_301]120mm EDF[/link] units.

Park RC Models distributes the RC Lander [link=http://parkrcmodels.com/product_info.php?cPath=33&products_id=1003]120mm Dynamic Power Series Metal EDF[/link] unit.

My first pick with be Tams conversion of the full size 128mm Dynamax
I have two of his setups and they are very nice. It's a plug and play unit with the ICE 160hv 2 ESC in the tailcone
it runs the neu motor 1915 1y on 12s it's seeing 5800 watts, 130 amps and you will be in the 17 lbs thrust range with your open ducting setup

Roger (Air Salley on the other site sells a very nice nacelle and mount) I'd use that

I have a full size dynamax with the 1915 1y in my 21.5 pound jet legend hawk and it flies it very well with a great jet like sound......

Your going to need 12s 6500mah at least, but you may want to look into 12s 7800 to 8000 mah packs for a good flight time... I'm running 6500 mah and get 4:30 minutes.


Another great option is the DS-94 HST , but I'd stick with the 12s version.... nice unit. Again this will fit in Rogers (air salley) nacelle. If you go to the EDF jet fourms on the other site you can find him very easy. You will still need 6500mah to 8000mah packs for a nice flight time

My new motors are only a few weeks away now and will offer an awesome package in the Extreme Alloy Ramtecfan. Testing of the sample 50mm inrunner has yielded 7kg thrust at only 108 amps on 12s. This was tested with old 5000mah 30c packs, with brand new current generation packs I would expect to be up around 7.5kg (16.5lb) thrust at around 120 amps. Weight of the complete fan unit ready to mount will be just over 1kg. Price of complete fan unit assembled and ready to run will hopefully come in at AUD$499.00.

In the 120mm to 127mm size class of fans, there are two fans claiming to produce 29 pounds of thrust (equivalent to a P-120 sized turbine). All the rest of the fans in this class produce much less thrust. The DS-94 HST with the 700kv motor and the XPS conversion of the Dynamax fan.

So, the comparison shows the following when each fan produces 29 lbs of thrust:
- The DS-94 runs at a lower amp draw than the Dynamax
- The DS-94 runs on 14 cells vs the Dynamax running on 16 cells
- The DS-94 runs at 5750 rpms less than the Dynamax
- The DS-94 consumes 2.8 kW less than the Dynamax
- The DS-94 weighs less than the Dynamax

The comparison shows the DS-94 is a lighter <font color="#000000">setup</font> (fan weighs less and less number of cells required) with longer flight times (less amp draw and less kw consumed) when using the same amount of mAh. The DS-94 is not as low cost as some of the other fans recommended but take a look at the photos below and you will see that German quality is second to none. This weekend, weather permitting, I will be maidening a 35 pound 1/6th scale Hawker Hunter that is powered with the DS-94 HST. It will be the largest and heaviest EDF to fly with a fan in the 120mm - 127mm size class to date.

If you want to go bigger, the TF-8000 is 140mm fan that will produce 30 pounds of thrust in the 5 balded version and 40 pounds of thrust in the multi-bladed version.

I've been following your hunter and it looks great man, looking forward to your report. I did fly the dynamax in the Hawk, put three flights on the system...then had to do the foam upgrade to the ICE 160HV2.
I found it to be a very impressive light weight setup....really happy with it. The plane flew very well.... flight time are going to be a little shorter than I want right now (4:30) with 6500mah.

My next plan is to try something.... I want to use 12s 25c 7800mah thunder power packs. They only weigh 2 oz more than my 6500 mah. I really think that is going to be a trick setup. I'll have all the power I could want and a good 5:30 to 6:00 flight. I'm waiting to buy the packs until the F-18 is close to done and they will be used in both the hawk and the F-18. So for now I'll fly the hawk on 6500mah.

I updated my thread when I flew it, I still neeed video and will work on that soon. Flying the giant P-51 tomorrow.

I wasn't planning on best of the west, but knowing your coming makes me want to come out and meet you. I'm not sure if I would fly, I really hate traveling with my plane and staying over night in a hotel. It's a 4 hour drive for me, So many stories of guys getting ripped off down there. Buttonwillow is like a truck stop on I-5 and it seems every year someone gets there planes taking from the hotel parking lot. If I do go I will drive into bakersfeild to get off the interstate.... or rent an RV and stay onsite that's the best really. I will look up the days and if anything I'll drive down to hang out with you and check out the meet. I flew at california jets twice and man it's pretty stressful to fly at a large meet like that, you have 5 jets in the air landing and taking off none stop and sometimes guys were lined up 10 to 15 deep to fly. I can fly alone for free at my home club...lol.. it's nice and quiet.

My 127mm fan has been used in quite a few Falcon 120 jets, another twin boom sport jet with the fan sitting outboard on top. Great performance on 12 cells and really great on 14s!! :)

The larger they are the slower they look flying , but some people are just little too envious, that is why you find commentary like above.

Please show us the video where its doing 200kmh.....the one I saw was more driving miss daisy :rolleyes::cool:
