120mm EDF for Skymaster A-10

Looking into getting a Skymaster A-10, but having a hard time finding any 120mm fans. Seems like all the threads are a few years old and the fans talked about aren't in production anymore. Also, since both fans are behind the CG weight does matter, a pound in the back = a pound in the front and a plane that's 2 lbs heavier than it needs to be.

jet fan 120

i think eflux r/c has them, probably a few other sites as well.
het 590-685 kv motor steel sleeved over the magnets, not the kevlar wrapped.
120 or so amp esc
12s 5000-8000 mah lipos for each fan

rcg large edf forum has a good jetfan 120 thread in it.
last few pages detail the het motor problems

The Jetfan is one good choice, the 685Kv motor is not however, only good for 10s, the HET motors have been having trouble with heat in the JF120 setups, I don't think the new sleeves over the magnets are going to stop the heat buildup issues. The 590Kv long can is the only one I would recommend, and only up to 12s with the JF. We have the combos here: http://www.extremerc.com.au/estore/i...oducts_id=1434

If you can fit it I would also recommend looking at our Extreme CNC Alloy 127mm fan with 11 blade ramtec rotor and HET 800 series motor. The heat issue is largely gone with my fan housing as it acts like one big heatsink and with the airflow through the fan the convection cooling is very effective. I have customers in the US flying my fan on 14 cells in large Jet Teng viperjets, 1.8 metre wingspan 10kg models, quite draggy but still hitting 170mph+. Smaller sports jets are hitting 170mph+ on 12 cells.
You can find the Extreme Alloy 11 blader combo here: http://www.extremerc.com.au/estore/i...oducts_id=1218

I recommend our Platinum PRO 120A HV-ESC for both these fans on 12s, very tough ESC with excellent programming features. Waiting on stock of these right now, fans and motors all in stock. Also bear in mind all pricing is in AUD, so when its converted back to USD by your bank the prices are lower, for example the Extreme 127mm Alloy fan at AUD$499.00 is going to end up around USD$380 when converted, I don't think you will find a better deal anywhere for an assembled dynamically balanced ready to install fan!

Not sure what will fit yet, so I'm not sure if the 127mm fan will fit, but another concern I have is all up weight. In the air the plane seems to handle the weight easily, but I fly from grass and higher weight will ultimately take it's toll on the landing gear and associated structure. Based on published weights the 127 would end up about .5kg heavier, once the corresponding weight is added to the front for balance. Not a lot, but something to consider. I'll have to make a decision once the plane arrives as they're coming in anywhere from 15 to 20kg. With regard to the ESC, how will the Platinum Pro 120A handle being in an enclosed fuse with no air flow? Most setups I've seen are using some type of cooling fan to keep ESC temps in check.

Just land softly :D hehe.
The 127mm fan is not much heavier than the 120mm, just over a kilo complete ready to install. I know most 127mm fans end up around 1300-1400 grams but my housing reduces the weight considerably.
The Jetfan is about the lightest in a quality fan you will get, a little lighter than the 127mm. I would be running fans on the ESC's if you intend to put them into the fuse, you can get fans from hobbywing that are used on their car ESC's and run on 2-3 cells, a small 500mah 2s pack would likely suffice. They are DC motors so directly wired would be fine. Or set the ESC up with the heatsinks facing each other and run a fan in front blowing through the fins, would also work nicely I think.

127mm fans will fit easily. In fact they would almost get lost inside. As Mark has suggested keep the ESC. S cool with fans.
I have the same model, twin 120mm Stumax fans. Twin Yep 180 amp ESC. S.
My all up weight is 20.6 kg. Mainly because I chose to use 12s11,000mah per fan.
She handles the weight just fine. Mind you I don't think I would want to dump it.

Didn't know SM was making 120mm fans? Might be helpful to the OP if you posted up some photos of the setup and inside showing how you did your ESC, its a VERY expensive kit and one most don't want to make mistakes on! :)

Thanks Mark, point taken.
Here's a photo of where my fans are for the ESC, s. They are mounted on edge side by side, 50mm square each. They are between the XT150's and the air valves. The ESC, s are mounted under the batteries tray. Sorry this is the best I have at the moment.
My fans are custom 120mm ones made by Stuart
