Hello All,

I'm looking for comments and insight from those that have used or are still using this first gen. system from circa 2006 approx. To clarify, this is a seven blade fan with a Neu1521 2Y motor and a Castle Creations Phoenix110HV ESC. The manufacturer at the time claimed approx. 5000W input power when using a 12 cell lipo setup (25C rated cells). Battery technology has moved on since then, we are in the realm of 70C+ rated lipos with less voltage sag now.

I have noticed that some are now using a 10 cell system with the 5012 set up because of the latter - can you please elaborate on performance and current draw, etc?
if you are using 12S with current technology lipos (70C rating), have you had to upgrade the ESC because of the original 110A limit?

What, if any was the Achilles heal for the 5012?

Can anybody provide a link to the original Instructions for this unit?

With the 12S set up and top C-rated batteries you'll find a huge difference in performance compare to a decade+ old ones at 25C. I would definitelly upgrade my ESC to 150-160A for a piece of mind,
Dropping a cell or two might be another simple alternative, the best you can do is check your static thrust and current figures with the e-meter.

You're not wrong, I've seen this in a few cases - I guess I'm looking for some examples from guys who actually have a 5012 unit and what they have done with current battery tech. As you suggest, dropping one cell is an option, or to make things uniform, drop two cells to10S. Probably the best option is to substitute a modern ESC, and go with 12S for all out performance. The heat sink centre body appears quite substantial, so I'm guessing that the 1521 Neu motor should cope with a modern 12S system...

Just hook it up on E-meter to check the figures gives you better result than just guessing or relying what others tell you or do.

not an option for me at the moment unfortunately mate...plenty of modelers have the 5012 setup, so their insights would be useful..

I can see you're running a Ramtec, is that the 9 or 11 blade unit?

Mate, different model even with the same power set up will give you different results. E-meter is your easiest option in your set up, otherwise contact directly BVM with more details and what model.
I run 9 bladed fans on each of my 127mm/12S set ups, spinning by Scorpions and Big Screamer OR, pulling pretty high amps so the highest C-rated packs is a must as with the older 30C packs I get occasional surging on full stick. Just converted another large Delta jet from turbine to EDF, (pic).

thanks to those that have commented so far, however I really am looking for experiences from modelers who have actually used the EVF5012 system in the field
