*finished* f 15 foam core board
 

I saw a pic in one of the jet posts how someone built a f15 kit out of depron. I got to thinking about using wal mart foam core board($2.50 a sheet).
I started a couple nights ago. this stuff is amazingly strong, so no inner supports are needed. once she's finished I'm going to fill in all the cracks with spackle and sand her down. so far I'm pretty impressed with the strength and light weight. so far she weighs 7 oz. I expect she'll be around 11oz when finished which is fine for the brushless pusher prop set up I plan to use. auw should come in around 35oz with a mega 16/15/3 and 3s3p lithium pack.
any of you guys build with this stuff? if not you should give it a try.
will post more pics as I go
p.s. the nose will go on last I plan to make it out of either eps or epp foam, this way in the event of a crash it should hopefully be the only part with major damage

Nice job! I think it was an Su-27 you saw, I saw it to. Made me think of building an F-14 the same way.

just removed the outer layer of paper and reduced the weight by about 2oz. kept the inner layer for strength

takes time to remove and is kind of a pain, but worth it. some people have soaked it over night to remove both sides of paper

for the wing I have one balsa spar along the leading edge, once they arrive in the mail I'll have one carbon fiber spar along the cg of both wings which will also connect the two. As for stringers in the fuselage, there are none. the plane being built with this board is stronger then balsa and I don't really see the need. the aft end has support boxes for the tailerons. I was thinking maybe a few bulk heads once I strart to build the hatch on the underside, and have the battery placement all figured out.but that's going to be about it.

I don't use plans. I go off photos that I print from the net and try to keep it as scale as possible. Its not too tuff really. plans are for people in love with balsa and those perfectly scale models. I'm sure I'll be one of those people some day but right now as long as it looks good and flys fast then I'm happy

finished and I'm very proud. I didn't know it would turn out as well as it did. hope it doesn't crash on it's maiden flight:eek:. everyone should try to build without plans, it gives you a sence of freedom.

This foam board looks perfect for a Mig 29 EDF I'm planning. What are you using for adhesive?

5 min epoxy and light spackle to fill the cracks. nose is all eps foam, paint is acrylic with a final clear coat.

OK, epoxy sounds about right. I made a raid on Wal-mart last night and I'll start cutting foam board Sat. morning. I'm using a 90mm WeMOTec fan on 20 cells. I'll hide the fan between the two original tailcones. Stretch the bungie, stomp on da pedal and let 'er rip!

if you soak the foam board over night in water, say the bath tub, you can easily remove the paper if your wishing for a easier sanding surface.

darn it :eek:my secret is out. been using this stuff for about 3 years. good stuff, i store mine in the bathroom and the presents of shower condensation makes the paper peel off in one sheet most of the time. your jets look good. also great for making 3d planes, an a lot easier than ordering the stuff off the net.
who says wal-mart is good for nothing.:D
gorilla glue, handymans adhesive, and 3m spray glue works good too.

Here's a couple of deltas I designed using Elmers foamboard with .188 carbon tubes for the L.E.s and T.E.The only draw-backs of this stuff is the paper on the board tends to cause warping if you don't seal it with paint while it's still flat and it's about twice as heavy as Depron with both paper sides still attached.However, it's very strong and cheap!I too have been using the stuff for over 4Yrs.Anyway,the little one has 330 sq.in. and the big one has 1000.They are called the X330&X1000 respectfully.

I ran across this suggestion as well, I've cut out the pieces for something closer to a trainer (sorry to highjack your thread). What's the consensus of take the paper off to save weight, vs leave it on to maintain rigidity? I pulled the paper off a test piece and it was LOTS more flexible than the paper'd cutouts.
