Tuning ESC with Throttle
 

Here's the situation. I'm running a test set up of Midifan, Kontronic 600-17, Jeti opti plus 70 amp, and two 3s1p Kokam cellpro 3200 [20c] in series for 6s1p. Initial run up showed 1200 watts Plus. I did this several times for very short period just to verify the readings. What I want to do is detune the power at the top end to around 950-1000 watts. I did this before with a different esc by adjusting throttle end point and center but I can't seem to duplicate the results.It's an Airtronics RD 8000. I have set the end point back to allmost 70% and it is still running up to1100-1200 watts. Is the speed control readjusting to the new full throttle signal and adjusting it's power so that is now the same power output as before? Maybe my theory on this needs some rethinking. The beeps you hear when you power up the ESC are all part of a startup sequence for the ESC, including auto setting end point adjustments. The Jeti ESC does not allow you to set end point adjustments for the throttle; you can only set the type of throttle used, such as linear or logarithmic. For this reason, you cannot "govern" your top end the way you want...you would need to go with a different ESC that has that feature.

Well there is one way - the ESC is autocalibrating the top end so let it do that. Use a P-mix to mix throttle into throttle some negative percentage - say 25%. Plug in your pack, run up the throttle to full briefly then shut down. Now flip the switch bringing in the negative mix and the next run up to full throttle should be less than full throttle. You'd need to do that each time you fly and remember to start with the switch in the correct position.

Oh good - some experts. Here's MY problem:

I removed the OS 61FX from my Hobbistar 60, and replaced it with a Kontronic 480 with a Jazz 55-6-18 BEC. I'm using a 4-cell 14.8 volt 4000 maH Lipo. I took it out to the field today, put the plane in a test stand, and gave it full throttle. The motor screamed for about 5 seconds then shut down. It doesn't take much movement on the throttle for the motor to go full blast. I suspect it shut off because it was sucking too much current(?) Looks like I need to adjust the throttle so that the full-up throttle position gives me the maximum allowable power without going above the current limit.

So I read the BEC instructions. It says:

"5.1.1 Automatic adjustment
The joystick tilts of the remote control are adjusted automatically in the APM every time the drive battery is connected:

1. Connect drive battery.
2. Tilt the joystick once all the way forward to the full-throttle position.
.
.
.
The autoprogramming is complete."

Didn't work.

Any suggestions? Maybe I should give it a much shorter burst on full throttle, instead of leaving it there for 5 seconds.

Wow. I hooked up the battery, gave it a very brief full-throttle and it reprogrammed itself, just like the instructions said. The lesson here is: "read the instructions".
