New E-Flite BAE Hawk
 

OK, today I did it, went out to LHS and picked up a new E-Flite BAE Hawk. Looks fantasic and it won't be a problem to assemble, not build because to me everything is already built. The LHS did not have the fan unit, so a call to Horizon Hobby took care of that. I already have an appropriate motor and found a 60 A speed control on the Net. Got several micro servos so it should be ready to fly shortly. Hoping I made a good choice, would like to hear from any others who are flying this or other EDF's.

Ober, me as well. I bought one last week and this is a really nice ARF. Would like to see a few and hear about a few out there myself!! What battery are you planning to use in yours??

All right so everybody bought a Hawk this past week.If you don't mind I'll jump in with you folks and 'Build & Tell' as with my findings.Has anyone here heard of ,or know of a Hawk using a 5 Cell Li-PO with a Hoffman Beast motor.

No, but a guy at my club has a Hoffman motor in an Electrifly L-39 w 4S and it went like hell. He claimed over 100 +MPH, close to 125 if I remember right.
I also think that it's not the Beast motor but the one for 60mm fans.
hooker53, I'm planning on starting with the 3S and getting a couple 4S down the road. I just picked up the servos for it. And after thinking I had a motor, turns out the motor has a 3.1 mm shaft and the E-flite fan adapter has a 4mm hole in it. So guess I'll need to pick up a new motor too. You're also right in saying that it's really nice ARF, hey even my wife said that it looks very nice. She doesn't go for the German camo that I usually do.

Well, it seems that the BAe Hawk is getting very popular. I have just got one from the LHS, and it really looks good. This is going to be my first EDF experience and I was wondering if I should get the recommended Delta V15 and the eFlite BL15 motor or if another fan/motor combo would be better and would offer better options for the future if I want to use it in another plane?

Regarding the battery, I heard that a 4S would be to heavy for the plane, any feedback on that? I certainly prefer a 3S 3200, cheaper but I do not want the plane to be a lame duck either!;)

- Do I need a separate BEC or the ESC will be fine?
- Servos? What are you guys using? HS-82MG?

I had an old Kyosho 70mm fan that I thought I could use but that didn't work out either. The servos I picked up are Tower's new 9gram, 17 oz servos that are about the same size as Hitec 81's. Still waiting to order the motor. I believe if you use the E=flite recommended ESC you don't need a separate BEC. Just my thoughts.
I picked a 60A ESC with BEC and I'm going with that.

The Reg. Phoenix 60 works great and has a BEC built in. On thing I have noticed about mine is I don't think It's gonna take off on our gress runway. I might try larger foam wheels but just don't know yet.

Thanks for your input. My parts are coming in, I am still waiting for the aileron servos (HS-65HB). I started working on the plane, I am adding a rudder. As I said, this will be my first EDF, but when I fly a plane with no rudder, I am missing something. ;) I do not know yet if I use a separate servo for it or use the same HS-82 as the front wheel, I am leaning toward a second servo.
For the ESC, I got a Tsunami 72.

I have not checked RCgroups.com yet, but it is surprising that there is not more activity about this plane.

Hello All,
I found out the other day that this plan will not come off our grass runway with 3s and the stock whells. I will have to get some bigger foam wheels and try it again. I think I'm gonna like this plane once I get it in the air!! Ha.

I am going to use 4S. I have seen it fly at my local club and it was doing great on 4S, we have a paved runway, so I cannot tell how it does on grass.

I was impressed by the small size of the wings, I hope it is not going to be too hot on landings.

I just flew my buds bae hawk two weakends ago , and you do need to keep it moving or it will stall , there`s a big thread in rcgroups of guys tip stalling ytheir hawks , over all when i flew it flys nice and it does land good just keep the plane moving with a little throttle , and you should be fine

I will be getting one soon and was also considering a Hoffman fan unit. Looks like it is this combo that will be the choice. Pretty green as far as electric stuff goes so if I am missing something please let me know. Does anyone have the link to RC-Groups thread on this plane?

Mine is almost complete, I should have been able to maiden it if I did not had a pb. with the Tsunami 72 ESC, I could not get the motor to run! Programing and their "manual" sucks, so I returned it and ordered an e-Flite instead, I will see how it does. In the mean time, As I said earlier, I built a rudder on mine and finally used the same servo as the steering front wheel.

is too much for this airplane IMHO not to mention you need to buy a ESC aprt from the fan unit combo , also a very amp hungry set up wich you would need a heavy battery , you can get what i have in mine for $144.99 http://www.ejf.com/index.php?main_pa...a436514fab7e55 I`m easyly doing 120 mph with that power set . Ed

Maiden flight today on the Hawk. I set the CG right in the middle of the recommended range 80 to 90 mm at 85mm and with a 3s2350 Lipo balanced perfectly. It was a good day for test flight just a slight breeze straight down the runway. Put it on the runway and applied the throttle
tracked fairly straight and a took off at about 125 ft down the runway. Climbed out nicely, not too steep and flew a couple of circuits around the field. Roll rate was pretty quick, even tho' I didn't set the ailerons at the recommended travel. I always think the throws are way too much, I prefer something a bit less twitchy. I didn't even need any trim adjustments, very unusual for me. Flight was short, 2 - 2 1/2 min but I wanted to see how it would land. Set up for landing but had to go around as I was too high. Set up again and this time cut the throttle fully, and the Hawk came in as easy as anything. Flew three more times after that and each was the same. Gradually increased time aloft by using the throttle until I got about 4 mins and used about 35% on the cell capacity.
