Phase3 Squall - WOW
1 Attachment(s)
I have owned three foamy EDF jets. Those prepackaged all-in-one RTF kits like HL sells millions of. You know, the F-16's, F-18's, etc. What a waste of money. All of them have been complete with poor quality parts and way less then exciting performance.
Well I just flew about the most fun thing I've ever flown in 15 years of RC flying; right up there with my over powered Hots of several years ago - The Phase3 Squall, the 4c version. This plane is absolutely incredible in it's quality, easy of assembly and thrill factor [:-]. With the stock motor, esc and recommended battery this thing is a ROCKET. I know a lot of guys are hoping these up; but lord knows why. I never got above about 1/4-1/2 throttle for the first few flights; this plane is not for the faint of heart. The best part is you can get the whole thing with 3 servos and two 4c batteries (buy chinese Turnigy) for about $225.00 Anybody looking for a thrill, but not wanting to spend a fortune really needs to check out this plane. |
RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
it was between the squall and the funjet for me. I say a lot of people had great success with the funjet, so i went with it. Might have to get me one later though

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
Phase3 makes great stuff. Their EF 16 is wildly popular. Excellent value for the money and good performance in stock form.
Go to RC Groups and search a little and you'll see there are HUGE threads for both the Squall and F16. The largest of the F16 threads took me 2 months to read[X(] |
RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
glad to see you like the squall. i was checking them out before i got a funjet. i like the funjet ,it is fast about 100 mph with a 2700 kv e- flight and a 6x4 apc prop. 3s lipo with a castle 54 amp esc. hand launching was a bear at first but you get the hang after a few tries if the plane doesn't get damaged to bad. anyway most ducted fan need more power and i would say they need at least four cell li-pos. there is alot of junk out there for sure. i think i'll look further into getting one in the future, now that i here some good stories on them..............thanks for letting us know about a good thing...................RON

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
I have several flights on it now and still have to be very judicious with the throttle - this plane is just a pure blast to fly. I'm using Turnigy 4s 2650mah batteries from Hobbycity (about $35 + shipping) and they are working great. You want an adrenalin rush - just get close to the ground [:-]. I can't believe this thing only costs $129.00 right now.

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
who did you buy it through ? do you had launch it ? i didn't look to see if it had landing gear or not,saw them at hobby people.................RON

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
just saw a video of it from hobby people. looks cool. it belly lands which is fine with me [ grass field ] i get my li-po's from value hobby. a 2200 mah 25 c ,4s would be 28.00....... a 3200 4s 25 c would be 40.00. the plane from hobby people is 129.00 with fan and motor. thats the four cell version. i may be getting one.............yeah...................RON

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
yes, got mine at Hobby People; hand launch and land on asfault, no problem at all. Just put a little clear protective tape on a couple of spots.

RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
Cool to hear of the quality. I just ordered a f16 kit from hobby people for $39.99, to my door for under $60! (president day sale or something!)
Curious with these speeds if a heavy duty mini servo is required or if a hs-55 will be ok? Also, do you think 4000kv is too high for a 4s lipo? |
RE: Phase3 Squall - WOW
Apparently Global (importer for the Phase 3) is having a flock of bad ESC's in recent months. One of their Hobby People stores in Orange County CA had to steal all the ESC's out of shelf models to replace ones burning up in recently bought models. I went to buy one and the four "new" planes in boxes on the shelves at one store were all without ESC's. This may be a recent problem with a current production run, So BEWARE!!!
Also there is no warning in the planes literature, that you had better cut the motor well before landing as that big gaping mouth air-intake under the fuse will scoop in everything from grass blades to twigs, rocks, bottle caps, and rocks which will destroy the EDF Blades even if just spinning in the wind with the motor off. I think this is a terrible design flaw. WHAT were they thinking with a "belly lander"!!?? I've seen two with shredded fan blades, and I heard from the plane's owners that Global doesn't have replacements. I love flying "Delta's" but this recent news has kept be away from the Squall, for now. |
