BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D i found a nib ,never opened byron A-4.. i building it now as a, dyn-e-max powered. if interested in this build, i can send pics. of mods, and progress. ive done lots of mods. so far. i think it will need them, to handel the new power ,and higher speed range..:)

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Hi,
The Byron A-4 will be a fun project to convert to electric power. I used the JHH E-Turbax in mine with a Neu motor. Which Dyn-E-Max setup are you using? Scorpion motor? For details on my conversion, read the AMP'D column called, [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1153]Higher Power EDFs[/link]. Good luck! |

PICS. i have so much time in the wings, i may do, a new built up set..do you think a new airfoil would be a good idea??
|
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Why is your speed break so far fwd??
You had better reinforce the tail area of the fuse as well. I did that to mine and it only has the E-Byro fan. |
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
The A-4 had trailing edge flaps and dive brakes. What those things in your middle of your wing for?

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
hi.. thanks for input..i have had- 4 -y/a A-4..i moved the flap forward on each one, untill it had no pitch change ,and floated like glider.its just closer to C/G. it also angles 7 deg toward the tip.moves air to the tip. this one is a little smaller . it will be covered by the wheel /landging gear/ pod. the aluminum pivot tube is just aft of my flap.the wing gets thin in that area.did not want to get into that mess.. i will beef-up aft area for sure..put servoe pockets in today..so far added ..4oz.. to wing.no gear mount in yet!! what do you think about full intake ducts??

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D how much does you weigh?? retracts? glassed?

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
RAPPTOR,
You do nice work. Do you have special machinery to make those precise cuts? I have always wanted to add flaps to my Byron A-4 because there is about a 5mph "window of success" when landing without them. My pilot, Lynn Bowerman, did a great job at the 2009 NEAT Fair and made the SKS event video. I am curious about your speed brakes and would like to see how they operate instead of adding flaps so keep us posted. If you use intake ducts, you will need to plan on proper air cooling for the ESC and battery. My air scoop into the E-Turbax was crude but still allowed the A-4 to go about 135mph. The air holes from the nose gear and intake openings kept the batteries and ESC cool. I am not certain how much speed I would gain by using air intake ducting because the wing thickness of the Byron A-4 was designed for landing without flaps. Regards. |
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D hi thanks for looking.i made the holes with a dremal.. i am thinking about making a new set of wings..build up. i will change the airfoil ..i think byron used an naca-64110. i dont like sem. airfoils on scale stuff. leading edge is to sharp also..it is taking to long and to much work to use the byron wings.. i think they maybe lighter..when i fab. the ducts ,ill put in a spot for the esc. i will do the ribs tonight, in compufoil..maybe a 3-5 percent camber ..

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Oh - those are flaps and not speed breaks. I see now you have a REALLY old kit - it's the fixed gear version.
Mine weighs 14 lbs ready to go. That's with glassed surfaces. I have 2 and one has flaps fitted. I will post some pics of it. I would be hesitant to change the airfoil though, this one is probably the best, most well behaved skyhawks around. Too bad they are not made anymore. I never really had the dreaded skyhawk tuck at slower speeds. Most of the other models out there will tuck pretty bad in a turn at slower speeds, but they all do it to some extent. |
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D thanks for info.is your c/g as per instructions? what power are you using?? how fast do you think it goes?? i found that if, c/g on my y/a a-4 was off ,,it tuckted

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Skyhawk how is that thing flying? I saw you flew it then I didnt hear anything else. Would love to see some video that thing looked good.

NEW PICS OF RUDDER:D reglued mold seam.was very weak. rear former, and vertical spar, made the rear section,, killer...will do stab pivots sunday..wings on hold untill i select an airfoil.. {geo -676 is in the lead!!}

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Gun,
Due to life restraints - I've only flown it twice. It flies really good. Unfortunatly I don't have anyone to shhot some video for me, and at that I only have my digital camera for short video - but I hope to change that this summer. |

:D if i had a video camera.i have no one to shoot me flying..i hooked up the elavator and rudder today.what a nightmare!! greg had the best idea, keep it simple..will take pics in a few..its very complacated!!
|
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
I left the rudder out on mine - they don't do a whole lot on any of the Byron jets.

Here are the pics of my flap install. This is a restoration so don't mind the mess! The servo is located under the gear pod.

RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
Uhh........How do I shrink the size of the pics?
|
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D hi. thanks for pics..did you need any nose weight to balance?? mine looks like it will need some.. greg said, his did not need any nose weight..i like your flaps. i my put mine in the scale location on the new wings..i think i will move the gear forward also .may help rotation. may help ,,nose high ,, look also. is yours electric??

Here is a pic I found of skyhawks A4. Yes Rapptor his is electric. I think he is using a byron electric conversion.

The link to my build is above. Yes - it uses the Byron electric conversion. The Isreali one does not have the flaps and is 14lbs ready to fly. Could have been lighter though if I had started from scratch. The powerplant was originally using the hacker A50, but it got changed to the hacker turbo before first flight just cause I got a smoking deal on one. I still have a few other byrons I could use the A50 in. The one with the flaps is a rebuid project. I didn't need any nose weight - that's the beauty of shifting batteries! I wouldn't change much from the original design. |
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
How would it sound with this inside?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxEtMkJ8Ne4 |
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:D FAN MAY DISTORT YOUR COOL JET SOUND,OR MAKE IT BETTER.. REDIRECT SOUND OUT THE BACK..
|
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
The idea would be to put it near an opening, not necessarily in the fan exhaust. It has 2 speakers and has sound exiting in 2 opposite directions.
|
RE: BYRON A-4 PRISTINE
:Dwork on making it lighter, and a little cheaper.. it will be a big hit!!
