Big Tiger Moth or E-starter

Can someone tell me which would be better a GWS Big Tigermoth with 400Motor, and 9.6V 750Mah battery, or a GWS E-starter with the same setup? I can fly until I get bored and land on FsOne, just want something that I can eventually do some minor aerobatics such as loops and rolls with when I get bored of just flying around.

Will probably up to brushless and li-po soon after buying, or maybe just bigger Ni-Mh.

Thanks,
John

RE: Big Tiger Moth or E-starter

I've had both and found the neither was any fun, trying to fly on the stock power system. I converted both to brushless E-Flight Park 400's shortly after. Using 11.1 V 3s 1350ma lipos I had really good flight times and both were really fun to fly. Getting the CG right after the conversion was a little weird (had to add 3 oz of lead to get them to balance).....I found that the E-Starter was a little more durable, but the Tiger Moth was more fun to fly and certainly looked cooler....Pat

Several more questions then. Did you get the brushless inrunner, or outrunner. Also about what are the E-starter's capabilities with the stock setup? What about the Tigermoth(Big Tigermoth that is)? What are the capabilites of each with brushless and li-po?

Thanks so much,
John

RE: Big Tiger Moth or E-starter

I have an Estarter that I fly stock (350 motor) with heavy 1100 mAh nimhs. I just used up my last replacement motor and am trying to decide whether the plane should remain brushed or be upgraded to brushless.

When people talk about 'fun' to fly, it really depends on what you want out of the plane. I enjoy flying this plane in a scale-like manner. You have to fly the plane on the wing, not on the motor. Some people appreciate this and don't always care for 'overpowered' planes.

To get a stock Estarter to roll decently, you have to get it moving--full throttle and a slight dive. It will loop easily and does a nice hammerhead stall.

That's the 350 setup. A 400 motor with D gearing using a 9x5 prop on 3S lipos has a bit more punch.

A 9.6V 750 nimh battery is likely not up to providing the amps to a 400 motor. Unless you've got good reason to buy nimhs (more crash resistant), I'd stick with the lipos. Much lighter for more power. My 8.4V 1100 mAh nimhs weigh as much as my 11.1V 2000 mAh lipos! Almost twice the capacity and more voltage to boot!

This is not to advocate brushed systems. I have a brushless powered Formosa (Pattern style plane) which, even though it has nice, but not unlimited vertical, could use more power to make it fly even better.

John,

You might want to consider the Multiplex MiniMagistar (Minimag). Set it up with the motor and battery combo that Patnchris suggested for the E-Starter and you'll have a terific plane that is also very damage resistant.

Ok, E-starter is on the way. Found a decent deal, and couldnt resist.
