basic esc help, how to start motor?

Hello, hopefully someone can help me. I have bought a gws ich400 speed controller.
I attached it to a receiever laying around the house with another servo attached, a 380size motor and a 6v 1100ma battery.
There is a toggle switch for on and off and one push button switch. In addition there is a battery type slector switch (voltage) and a channel switch. I'm not sure what the channel switch does.

With this setup the Bec is working dependent on the toggle switch (the servos attached to the receiver will work but the motor will do nothing).
I don't know if there is somthing i'm missing with the pushbutton switch i'm missing because i've yet to find a purpose for it.

Please help, Its really been bugging me trying to figure out whats wrong with this

When you say a 6 volt battery - how many cells do you have?

Most controllers run on a minimum of 6 cells - they will have a max rating as well. I suspect that your low voltage cutoff is not allowing any power to go to the motor (a feature used to still give you control i.e. servos work, but no motor control as your battery output is too low).

Try a fully charged 6-8 cell pack and see if it does the same thing. Also make sure your throttle is at idle when you power on both the TX and ESC.

Hello yes its a 5 cell battery, the esc does say from 5-8 cells, is there any way i can just check to see if this works such as voltage readings between points or somthing. I havn't shorted anything out but still can't think of anything else that could be wrong. Thanks for the help

I would still try at least a 6 or 7 cell. I really think it might be the low voltage cutoff.

You won't find much use for a 5 cell flight pack anyway.

for testing purposes can i just rig up 7 AA batteries together or are the "cells" different than a standard battery

That will work. They will not be able to sustain a high amp draw so don't run the motor too long.

ok i tried the AA batteries still with no success. I have taken the shrinkwrap off of the esc, and just with skin resistance the motor will run when i hold it. The start switch is working ie, won't run till i push it, then if i disconnect and reconnect the batteries the motor won't run without pushing the start button again. The controlls on the transmitter still do nothing regardless if i'm holding it so the motor is running or trying to have the motor run as it should. There are 2 pots on the esc board, i assume one is the cutoff point for low voltage and the other controlling the midpoint for the esc range. Thanks for any more input, thiis is starting to frustrate me

I don't use that ESC - let's see if anyone else has one that can point you in the right direction.

Anyone?

Mike
