receiver question
 

I recently went and purchased a new setup and part of it was a Berg4L Four channel Lightweight Receiver that the clerk at the local hobby shop recommended for the plane i purchased, when I got home and inspected it further it seems he sold me one with one less channel than i need. My plane has 4 servos and I assume one channel for the esc, now i realize that this may be a dumb question but would that mean I would need to go return and purchase a new receiver or can I put the ailerons on some sort of mixer reducing the 2 servos effectively to 1 channel.

You need a "Y" cable for the servos. That will allow you to use 2 servos (one for each aileron) from a single channel.
If you want to use mixing, you'll need a 6 channel receiver.

Just my opinion but before I bought the y harness, I'd talk to the LHS to see if they will take back the receiver since you purchased it based on thier recommendation. The cost of the harness will most likely be lower than the differance in the receivers, but either way, they made the recommendation. Perhaps it's worth asking.

I believe the OP has the correct receiver.

He needs a 4 channel receiver. He states that he "assume one channel for the esc" which would then leave 3 channels for servos. He states he has 4 servos and I think he believes he needs 1 channel for each servo, thus thinking he needs a "5" channel receiver.

This isn't true, though. A 4 channel receiver is exactly what he needs.
1 channel for the ESC
1 channel for the rudder
1 channel for the elevator
1 channel for the ailerons using a "Y" cable.

This will work perfectly with a 4 or more channel transmitter.

Oh wow that didn't occur to me, whoops! Well no biggie, i went and purchased a 7 channel for only..$15 more so not a big loss, not to mention the physical size/weight are damn near the same! I really appreciate the input! :)

The 7 channel receiver will be just fine. I always buy at least a 6 channel even if I only need 3 of them. The cost of more channels is negligible and the extra channels will probably come in handy in the future. There are even some accessories you can put on your plane that will use the extra channels.
