RE: New four stroke
I would go as far as you can go without the valves hitting the head, even cut pockets for the valves. Little need to worry about valve float without the inertia of lifters and rocker arms.

RE: New four stroke
Messing with flatheads and compression is a black art. To much milling and the air can't turn the corner to get to the combustion chamber.
About the best info is from the gokart racers and the JR dragsters using the 5hp briggs. Lots of unobtainum stuff.

OH yeah! ten-4 on the unobrainum. I was browsing a JR dragster web site the other day and a guy was selling "ready to race"
motors for $8500. I thought that was a little precious.

RE: New four stroke
I worked for an automotive engine rebuilder back in the late 50s, early 60s. Did a lot of flat head Ford V8 and dodge 6cyls. as stock car engines. This was before production engine rebuilding came in. All the engines were hand built. Right about keeping the airflow as straight as possible from carb to cyl. Also keeping the cross section area the same from carb to cyl. Thinning down the valve head to lighten it and allow more airflow. each little thing added a little more HP.
