Here is a picture of the Toro with a motor mount and the set up for Electronic Ignition.

I'm planning to run it on Gas Glow first and I may go to EI.

The plane I'm putting it on, a 88" Clipped Wing Cub, is tail heavy.
I have a ST-90 and 1 1/2 pounds hanging on the fire wall and a extra heavy brass spinner
so I could use the weight of the flywheel. So that is still an option for me too.

If you need the weight to balance for the J3 Cub...go mag and save your glow/gas experiments for the next engine/plane. Its fun to fly too!!! Capt,n

Ralph,
Don't forget that you need to connect the nipple on the carb insulator to the nipple on the aluminum carb pump cover with a peice of fuel line. This will provide your pulse to the carb pump from the crankcase. The plug threads for the 2bbl Toro is 10mm. If you find an adapter, let us know. I am running mine on electronic ignition with a rear pickup.

Hi Dave thanks for the heads up on the pulse for the carb,but I did have that covered.

What kind of numbers should I expect from my Toro on EI?
And which EI are you using?

If I can find a steel cased spark plug I'll go a head and make my own.

I was wondering if there was enough metal to drill and tap for a standard plug.
That would be the easiest of all.

Rather than make them I bought mine from CH Ignitions. Less than $10.00 each as I recall. As for the pulse line I connect mine with neoprene hose. Doesn't harden up like the Tygon does. The Toro's I have done so far were the 1 barrel ones and I propped them for about 7500 RPM. Personally I don't like to run my engines above that. Very hot and humid most of the year around here.

I am using a Chinese brand-X synro style EI. It works well and was affordable. I got 8,000 on a APC 16x8 prop.

Thanks for suggesting CH for glow plug adapters. I didn't know that they had the 10mm size. I guess they can make anything.

I spent the hot part of the day installing the Toro in my Clipped Wing Cub.

I have run it some on Gas/Glow but out of the blue I ordered a CH Ignition for it.
I'm still not sure why, I just did. Any way it will be here maybe as early as Monday.

It flew very nice with the ST-90 but I had to / wanted to make it a gasser.

I had the batteries as far forward as I could get them and still had 25 ounces on the firewall
plus the heaviest spinner I could find.
I almost ran it with a Mag. just for the extra weight.
I'm using 1-inch standoffs to make the cowl line up.
If I figured right I'll still need 12 ounces on the firewall.

I'm going from a 13 x 8 to a 16 x 8 so take off should be about 10 feet
and I'll be able to idle along at a snails pace.

Here in the Sacramento Valley we get a North Wind 15 to 20mph often and this
should be a perfect setup for playing on those windy days when no one else wants to fly.

The last picture is of the L-4 I used as a model when I made mine.
After I get the motor tuned all I'll have to do is paint the cowl and it's done.
This was an abandoned 1/4 scale kit I finnished.

just an update on what these motors will fly for any of you that are interested.

all of the planes listed have used stock flywheel and a 11 mm carb, unless noted otherwise.... (2 barrel type motor) we are also switching to the lawnmower muffler and homemade aluminum exhaust header made from an electric junction box (light/cheap/works great) there is a how to thread on this forum...


GP super stearman/pt-17 stock 2 barrel, modified stock muffler .... flies scalish

Goldberg giant tiger stock flew lethargic, polished ports, 11mm carb lawn/muff flies respectable, now has 9 inch wing clip flies well.

cmp/china model hellcat 9mm carb or so decent homemade muffler....killer combo! flies beautiful. forgiving at 10.5 pounds

homemade 65 inch yak profile flies nice but underpowered, needs bigger carb and muffler, may get new engine (larger)

giant stinger was stripped down to a stick, almost 15lb's with DEAD stock toro...flew like a b-17 with full fuel and bombs, whew!

GP ugly stick 60-90 KILLER setup ! cut back to the second partial bulkhead,make tail dragger,battery and servos in back, make new firewall, 11mm carb, lawn/muff will hover at 8.5 pounds, no extreme pullout power, but ports unchanged yet...plane will never thermal away, but lands respectfully with short draggy approach...

a 60-90 ucando3d would be good plane also..
the cmp 190 should be perfect ...
gp gee bee would work, but deadsticks would be ugly...

You want to have around 900-1000 square inches minimum, but we have been smaller with success ....

I see some people were asking about ballancing the Toro. I never ballanced the crank on the Toro. It was allready good. Most engines are pretty close. Only a few need ballancing. I just used a Dubro prop ballancer to ballance the flywheel on the mag versions. Good little engines. I wish they were as available as they were a couple years ago.

Tell me about the tuned pipe.

Did you port the cylinder so it could take advantage of the pipe?

If so what are the numbers and how well does it perform against other boats?

Exhaust port is raised ever so slightly. I'd say only a degree or two but it was never measured.

Weedie's on boats aren't that typical. Most guys go with the Zen as it gets a mono over 40mph as opposed to a weedie stuck just under 30mph. I'm GPS'ing 26mph currently. Next season, I'll get her over 30 with some more engine work and a big bore carb. Biggest problem now is I need to go way fatter on the needle but the stock carb has no needles found. They set these engines as lean as possible for enviromental purposes. With a tuned pipe on there, it is way too lean.

Main reason for the pipe is to get rid of the annoying weed eater canister muffler sound and lower the noise on the water.

BTW, what plane did you toss your toro on?

Look up about 5 posts.

1/4 scale Clipped Wing Cub.

The first time I flew it I had 1 1/2 pounds of weight on the firewall.

It flew well but the engine stalled headed into the wind.
When I turned it to land it tip stalled and I ended up ripping the landing gear off
and damaging the fuse in front of the wing pretty heavely.

When I rebuilt it I extended the nose 2 inches and lost all of the balast

I haven't flown it again but I have great expectations.
It flew very well, I just made a stupid mistake.
And now it should fly even better.

Does anyone have a Toro just sitting around?

I was flying this afternoon and was hit pretty hard.

I bent the crank and broke the back off the motor, but I didn't break the prop.

I would sure like to put my cylinder and piston on another engine.

The crank can be straitened and the backplate can be trimmed and 3 standoffs used instea. I have done it before on a couple of crash damage engines.

If you look at Cummins Tools. they sometimes have Recon Ryobi Pro trimmers. It is the same engine. Also the Redmax weekeater uses the same engine. I guess cummins tools is not somthing else. I am not doing the Homelite. Mark Brill is. He does some engines on his own. He is also going to be doing a Husqavarna 25cc.

I used the HDA 48 on the G62. Same as they come with from Horizon.

The Toro's are getting to be harder and harder to find. I converted over 150 of them. They are a good little engine.

Gentlemen -

I am new to gas engines and moving into them with a question on a Toro 25.4cc engine with a stock walbro WYJ carb. I do not like how the throttle is a push type assembly and it seems too stiff for a golden rod and servo to push. Is there a replacement two needle Hi/Low carburator that the R/C airplane guys have been switching to? Any help as to where I can get this, modifications, and costs.
The engine has a custom muffler and a trimmed down stock flywheel (I've been told).
Does anyone use a primer pump on this engine?
I was going to buy the Tower Hobbies velosity stack and isolation mount on the firewall to lessen vibration unless there is no reason to do it.
