has anyone ever tried to convert the Ryobi 990r 4 stroke?
I just received a Ryobi 990r (26cc 4 stroke) from my brother in law and was wondering if anyone has tried using one of these? I am thinking it is probably going to end up pretty heavy, but might be a fun project.
Has anyone ever tried to convert one and use it? I was thinking I would get a 20x8 or 18x8 prop for it and see how it runs.

I should have known better, I feel like a dummy for not searching first. I never remembered seeing any of these before, so I just discounted searching.
Thanks for reminding me.

No problem. The reason you dont remember seing a lot about these engines is they are on older threads that we have already been through and they might have there place on an airboat like style like the everglades.I still have 2 brand new converted RTF basiclly, just have to make my mount. They will spin an 18x6-8 at about 6800-7000.I have one with stock muffler and one with a straight pipe.I dont think anyone really came up with an airframe for it.It would be best to read all the threads and then make your decision.Ive been thinking about parting with mine.

Hey, about the only way I found to make one useable is to convert it to gas/glow. The weight is then manageable around 3+lbs. It runs very well, and will turn 18x6 or 18x8 props 7-8000 rpms depending on the fuel mix. I fly one on a Telemaster converted to a flying test bed which in itself is very heavy (16+ lbs.). It flys it with good authority. mounting is best suited to an airframe with open engine or something lika a WWI aircraft. If you can use it it is a great engine.

Make it from the stock plug. The one that came in mine was the perfect size down the barrell to tap with out even drilling! it was the easiest adpter I have ever made. The spark plug has a ring around the barrel, cut it there all the way around with a hack saw and it will just pull right off! NO chipping at ceramic, trim a nec. and tap and presto a glow adapter.
