I did few of those some years back. The one I kept for my son ran well but was a little harder to hand start than any of the Echos whicj I prefer. Compression is the culprit. Otherwise a decent engine. Where are your needles at? You may be a little lean based on what you describe. The carb is fine for the engine, I use it on any 40 to 50cc engine I do. I did tap my engines as I recall for external pulse for what it is worth.

OK lets start at the beginning. Check the timing and make sure it is at 28 to 30 degrees BTDC. Open the needles to about two turns out and start again. This is rich but it will run. You said it goes dead stick in the air, what are you doing when that happens? You want the low set so it will transition from idle in a smooth curve with no hesitation as you increase throttle. To get this you will lean the low until you can't transition then fatten it up a tad. Set the high end for max RPM and richen it up a bit. Remember that as you adjust the needles you should only make very fine adjustments, like a screw drivers blade width. Also when you adjust the low it does have some effect on the high end but not vice-versa. This exlpanation is very basic for any gas engine but will get you started.

It sounds like you got a engine that needs break-in or ring may not be installed right? you should not need new piston ring already. Did you measure ring end gap with just the ring in the sleeve? Gap should be very small. Can you tell us more. Capt,n

Run it a tad rich then fly it. Running the engine in the air is the best break-in procedure there is. Running it a little rich will help keep it cool and lubricate the cylinder. I run Lawnboy oil for break-in and run all my oil ratios 50:1 break-in oil or not.
