Default dr1 with a poulan 42cc (pics)

Heres what my buddy is dropping a converted 42cc into. It still will have the mag,not electronic...I THINK its a flair kit?

My buddy has modded it a lot though. We painted in the colors on fabric covering..Used acrylic hobby paints. I just finished the weathering and shading tonight. only need to clear it and he will be reassembling !'

hope you like.

by the way I recently maidened my old nosen trainer I had found framed up..it has a 46 cc poulan in it. It was a tad tail heavy and quite SCARY the first flight..we changed the balance and adjusted the thrust line some more..looking forward to a CALMER second flight...

it was major powered up with that dang 46cc !

it may just be a camera parallax issue, but you might want to take a hard look at the incidence of that top wing before you commit to a flight attempt. Looks like it has WAY too much positive incidence, should actually be a degree or two negative... Otherwise a GREAT LOOKING model! Good Luck!

The top wing is just sitting on the wire hard points. You are right the incidence is way off in the pic. When the wing is bolted down on the wires its very hard to get back off. So we didn't fully assemble it for the picture..nothing is bolted together in that shot.

My friend has built it so the top and mid wing come off with the outer struts in one piece....

What is the Poulan 42 like to convert. I have a chance to get one kinda cheap but I don't want to pay for a engine that isn't worth converting.

Should be simmilar. A quick Google search came up with videos and threads. Harbor Freight Tools was selling refurbished 40-something cc poulan saws a while back for about $100, I almost bought on on general principle. Didn't BME make and engine based on the Poulan?

The only thing that may be an issue is that the carb hook up on the jug is for a rubber boot. That is not a big deal. Some say the rubber connector is better. It would isolate the carb from vibration and heat better than bolting it to the jug. You would mount the carb to the airframe using a homemade bracket. Or you can do like the link above.

From what I saw on Youtube videos they look the same. One of these more experinced guys may be able to tell you definitively. These guys have conversion parts for both Poulans, call them?

Fot what it is worth............If you have a Poulan 42 or whatever else for nearly free or free go for it and have fun.

If want a really good engine and am willing to pay a little, get an ECHO SB1080. That is the 50cc shortblock. Search the net and you will find them. Go ahead and buy one new. I bought mine off EBAY for $140, they retail for about $200. You are adding that price to whatever you put in the Poulan. For the extra money you are getting a BME-50 clone. Mine is by far the best engine I own. The power to weight ratio is very good and it is super reliable. Buy a New carb, or several, off one of the EBay stores for $10.

hen you add the price of upgrading the engine to the total cost of a giant scale plane it makes sense to me. If this is too much power I suppose you could use a smaller carb and or a restricted exhaust. This is a light engine compared to most conversion engines so you would probably come out ahead.

I digress....

The 42cc is a completely different engine. The good: it has a "normal" phenolic carb adapter and is much easier to convert. The bad: it weighs more than the 46cc.

I had one on a Giant Stik, and it had good power and flew great even though the engine is a bit heavy. It is really easy to convert however.

Edit: I should probably add that you need to plan on using electronic ignition for the 36/42cc engine series, as the coil mounts to the chainsaw case; not the engine itself....

Poulan 42cc....

It can be mounted this way, or if your firewall is wide enough, you can make plates that bolt to the crankcase bolts and then mount to a beam mount.

By the way, I also completely agree with SCOTA's remarks about the Echo. Echos are great engines.
