Briggs 40cc 4-stroke compression release?
I could not find the old thread on this. How do I disable the compression release?
I have been playing with one of my briggs 40s. It runs well with the magneto but the starter is a pain. I made up a hub for an EI unit. It idles down to less than a 1000 rpm with the magneto. A little lower and the compression release starts to click. It would be fun to see how low I can go. It'll be nice to see if I can pick up some RPMs too. |

I did not mess with the compression release. I did alter it for an EI. It starts easy and I did pick up some power. 6200 with a 20x8. Pretty weak but maybe useable. I sounds like an old Maytag washing machine when it is idling. I'll cut off the extra metal later. I made a ring that fit over the snout and cut six grooves to fit over the reinforcing webs. That ring is to secure the sensor bracket. The ring on the prop hub that holds the magnent rotates to set the timing and is secured wiht set screws. This system takes all the guess work out of where the magnent goes. I really like this sytem. I modeled it after one Ralph Cunningham did. His work is so neat and professional looking. I wish there was a site I could go to study his conversions.
