Which Engine is which
 

Hi,
I'm getting confused here with all this talk about cells, geared engines, electric engine, gas engines, so on...

Can anyone spell out to me all the types of engine and what they actually consist of, ie a definitive giude to all the engine types (not an essay, just a brief description of each and what they consist of/how they work would be nice)

I hope someone feels up for it, as I really am getting confussed with all these engines!!!

Conversions are mostly gasoline engines that have been converted from something like a chainsaw, weed trimmer, leaf blower, or anything else. Sometimes you may see a glow engine being converted to gasoline, usually larger glow engines, but not always.

Gas engines are engines made just for airplanes by a few companies like BME, Desert Aircraft, Zenoah, Brison, etc. These engines are what everyone would like to make their conversions run like, sometimes they run better and weigh less, but rarely. Also the gas engines made just for airplanes can be bought in larger, multi cylinder configurations. Which is not easy for the average guy to convert or make.

Glow engines are engine that run off from a mixture of Methyl Alcohol and lubricants. Most glow engines also need Nitromethane to run, usually the smaller the engine the more nitro % is needed. Engines talked about in this forum can be anything from single cylinder basic 2-cycle, 4-cycle, and rotary, all the way to multi cylinder engines in any and all configurations.

I do not know much about electric flight and or cells required, etc. Any electric guys care to help out here?

Go to the link below and nose around. I think you will pick up a lot of knowledge. That's where the electric guys hang out.
