TIM-6 ignition - - - like or dislike?

I've had a JEH TIM-6 ignition for 3-4 months now and has worked well. About a month ago I burnt up one of the transistors and the coil unknowingly. My best guess is that the engine died and the magnets were under the hall sensor while I fiddled with the carb. This prolonged "dwell time" melted the coil. No problem. I ordered another $27 coil and replaced the two transistors and was careful to unplug the battery or watch for the magnet position if it died again. Boom, it happened again. I think it only partially shorted the coil because I could let it cool off and it would spark another time or two then stop.

Has anyone else had problems with this system? How would you install a fuse to shut off power if stalled?

Has anyone come up with an alternative to the $140+ commercial ignition setups?

The complete basic CH Electronics CDI ignition is $89.95. Also needed magnet ($1.50), Hall sensor($7.50) sensor. Long way from $140.
Sometime CH has refurbished units $100 including Syncro Spark computer timing.

hey Doug, if you built the tim-6 then you shouldn't have a problem putting together an ignition with the prebuilt CH circuit board and coil, about $60. awhile back they had a special $45 offer for rcu users...

either way it's better than buying those weak modelelectric coils at $27 a pop
