homelite flywheel
What is the effect of grinding of the fins of the flywheel? Wont i need these if im goinging to use the pull start? New to this stuff so please don't think Im to stupid. :)

The purpose is to reduce the drag they cause. Since the prop is nothing more than big fan that provides cooling air there is no reason to leave 'em on! There is also a bit of a weight reduction, too....

ballastboy, the fins to take a lot of power from the engine. Its best to have them removed if your going to put a prop on the engine. The boss's near the center of the flywheel are what the pullstarter need to operate. If your having trouble getting someone to turn down the flywheel on a lathe for you( this is the best method, not grinding) Peter Faith at www.wackerengines.com sells the flywheel ready to fly for $15 and the best carb to make some real horsepower for $17 I believe, he even has the prop hubs and engine mounts for these engines. BTW, you want to rebalance the flywheel after you remove the fins, Peters are already if you buy one from him. |

I used 4" cutoff wheel (type used with die grinders) in a drill press at max RPM and just ground away. Set table height and have at it, if you have space for a drill press.
Also allows a nice cut off of the fins lower than the magnet and counterweight area. You can dress up the cut surface with a file and then wet/dry on a flat surface. ( I used the mirror in shop BR. Yeah I clean my own shop sometimes!) Did static balance and it seems to run fine. Necessity mother of invention/alternatives or something like that ! [>:] |
