38 cc poulan

i haven't found anyone mention converting a 38 cc poulan chainsaw. i can pick one up for $99. i believe this model has the mag bolted to the case. has anyone ever made a bracket to mount it to the engine? i know a machinist quite well (that would be me) so i could fabricate something out of aluminum. just looking for ideas, and yes cost is an issue. my fun budget has already been exceeded this month with the two new radios i bought. also weight is not really a problem as i am going to put it on a 15 pound cub (sort of spad sort of wood) any input would be welcome. thanks fellas.

I wouldn't bother with the 38cc unless you can get one for a lot cheaper than $99. You can pick up a 42cc or 46cc for a little over $100, and the weight difference is negligible. If it is for a 1/4 scale Cub though, the Poulan 33cc - 38cc would be good. Obviously overpowered, but not outragiously so. The bigger Poulans are way too much. I wouldn't put my 46cc on my 1/4 Cubs - that would be insane.

Do a search for Poulan on these forums, there are plenty of talk on this subject.

RE: 38 cc poulan

i pretty much scoured this site for "poulan" before i made the post. i should note that the $99 is Canadian so it's about $5 bucks US.(lol actually around $75) i would have no trouble paying that for the engine (factory reconditioned) but like i said i don't think i would put electronic ignition on it. i was just curious to see if anyone had converted one without electronic ignition that's all ! anyway thanks again.

US$75 is a good price for the 38cc. I'd say go for it. It should convert no different than all the 33-42cc Poulans. You'll indeed have to figure out a way to mount the magneto pickup on the engine, but the carb insulator is a simple bolt-on unlike the 46cc.

Bigbird1, what's your setup on the 46cc (muffler, ign, etc.)?

Same as you have....CH., BCM wrap around, Hanger9 large mounts..Had to send them the motor...Machinist went to boot up the mill and it ate the disk....they used mine to prototype again...
Welllllll worth the time it had to stay their...came back with new carb, (even made a fancy air cleaner setup for it) crank cut off at the back, built, tested and they toted the note on the return shipping..for the price of a conversion kit.

Gotta give them [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif] up on that one....;)
Should finish me out for gas motors..gives me 8 rtr..

Terry 'gotter' done
