Husquvarna flies!

1 Attachment(s)
All,
update to my Husquvarna 88cc ,5.3 cu in conversion. I have successfully flown my first 33%, gas powered H9 Extra 330L powered with this engine! swinging a (for now) zinger 26x10 prop at roughly 6200 rpms, it hauls this 27lb (roughly) bird into the air. performs nicely! not unlimited by no means, but hauls it enough to do imac. Im amazed at how it runs now! 3 flips with choke, then about 5 flips just about every time so far and she is running!

thanks to Ken Lambert for the muffler, Mark Levings for the Husky, and CH for a very well running ignition system!

Very nice setup there, Ron. I see you hired Tiny Tim as the pilot. ;)

How's the vibration on the big Husky? Did you weigh the engine+muffler?

the muffler is light,he could cut the pipes off an inch or so and probly increase engine performance a little

volfy,
heh, tiny tim was already there, since the bird is used.

i didnt wieght emboth, but i think the engine is about 5-5 1/2 lbs,but im not positive. it was during summer that i had it off.

as far as vibration, it doesnt shake as bad as i thought it would for a single. mostly at low idle wil the tail shake some. wings dont shake too bad. ive seen patty wagstaffs shake more IMOHO...
i still want to try my MSC 25-10, but ive been too lazy to change props..

thanks ken, i was going to ask you eventually if i could cut the pipes for power, and how much, but wouldnt the noise go up too?

it will increase slightly but not much.

Try a 3W 26X10 or Pro Zinger 26X10. The regular Zinger are not very good. Even at 27lbs and 6200rpm, you should have unlimited vertical. My GSP Edge w/Brison 5.8 weighs 28lbs and swings a 3W 26X10 at 6500rpm will hover at 1/2 throttle.

RE: Husquvarna flies!

i can get a pro zinger 26x10 at shop. but my experience with a pro on a ys 140 wasnt very good. the same size prop in apc brought it back to life and plane flew like it should. so , im a little leary of having another zinger.

i would like to try several props, at least a flight each to find the right one. i would definately share my experiences with everyone here on what props worked for me. [8D]

i wish it was unlimited, but its not there. which is ok by me. it could also be the prop, like on my Ys mentioned above. have a msc 25x10. supposed to pull harder that the bigger 26in. we'll see...

i plan on reducing the wieght some too.

I switched from reg Zingers to Pros and will not go back. The difference between them (22X10 size) was night and day. My GS Stinger (G62) will now knife edge and wouldn't before. Also got a noticeable increase in rpm. I would go to a 23X10 if I had the room!

I will be real interested in your findings as I have a stihl 91cc going in a 1/3 scale gs-300 at 21 lbs AUW.I think I will need about the same prop.

Update!
finally got to get another chance to fly. wieghed airplane and did thrust check. wieght of plane is 25 3/4 lbs dry and thrust with 26x10 zinger is about 33.6 lbs on a digital fish scale.

didnt get a chance to try my msc prop, 3 of the bolt holes are just enough off that i couldnt get it bolted. will work on that.

also had another vote today at field for a pro zinger, so i hope to try one out soon.

will update as i get more info for those that are interested.

A pro zinger is not designed for a 4 stroke it is designed for the RPMs of a 2 stroker so I am sure you will be happy with one on you Husky flyer.

RE: Husquvarna flies!

update,

been flying the extra/husky combo with a MSC 25x10. a little wider blade than the square tip zinger. 5900 rpms with thrust at 33.8 to 34lbs of thrust on digital fish scale.

seems to fly a little faster, even though only doing 5900 rpms.
vertical is still fine.

next step, Mejlik 26x10N carbon.

i also noticed that my engine is a very leaky beast... this normal for conversions??

Update again
Tried out my new Mejlik 26x10N today... wow! very nice. 6200-6300 at power. did vertical climb after take off. just as good if not better than the 25x10 MSC, and definately better than the zinger square tip, which has now bit the dust...

so far, i think ive found my props. MSC and Mejlik.

havent done a pull test ,but im not worried about it right now! :D
