Poulan bearings
 

I need to replace the crank bearings on my Poulan 46. Anyone have a good number for bearings with the proper seal.

I have had 2 of these engines and both used a different sized bearing and different seals. On one the seals were part of the bearings and the others were not. I'm sure someone else will chime in and explain which ones you need. Sorry I can't be more help.;)

You will have to identify which type of bearing is in your saw. There are somewhere around 4 types (Type I,II,III,IV) saws and they all can have either type in them from what I can remember. You can pull the Poulan # of both kinds off the web but you are wanting the bearing number? If you take them to a genuine bearing store, they can match them up.

The bearing with the seal all the way around it is #MTP 4986....The number on the bottom if the crankcase of the 46 using this bearing is 530-049794 and 3254...........This bearing won't fit in the other case, which is narrower because the seal is not part of the bearing, and the case is slightly narrower across the bottom..The wider cylinder is black, the narrower on with the smaller bearing is natural cast aluminm color....Why not take the case off and look at the bearing ?

I've got the bearings off the engine now. They are the ones withe the seal all around. None of the local Poulan repair shops have them in stock. The bearings don't feel rough or sloppy. I was seeing .010 /.012 T.I. R. measured at the prop hub. Thats why I pulled them out. One of the shops said it might be a worn crankshaft. He said the bearings almost never wear out. This is an "reconditioned" motor from Lawnstation via my friend Volfy.

Only way the crank could wear is if the crank was twisted and run for a LONG time that way...If the crank was worn .005 it would be noticeable to the naked eye, and shiny where the bearing fits on it....I have never seen a crank worn that far....

Ok, here's what I found on re-examination. The bearings are a loose fit to the crand shaft. Best I can measure with my micrometers, is .001 to .0015 clearance between the bearings and the shaft. I temporarily reinstalled them and checked the side play again, and it was .002-.003 total. When I got the bearings really clean, one felt pretty rough. Guess I'll go ahead and replace them both. What, if any should the side play be, on a proper crankshaft ?

The crank bearings on Zenoah engines are a very slight press fit when cold...A light tap lets the crank drop out of the case...Most other engines require a puller to take the bearings off the crank..
Poulan crank here is .0004 smaller than the ID of the bearing, the Zenoah is .0006 smaller...Neither has any perceptible play..

I got one of those lawnstation engines also and I found both Crank bearings were just about seized. Wish I'd looked at it right when I received the motor! Anyway the local saw shop ordered the brgs. Only took a few days, cost about $23.00 a set. These were the one piece bearing and seal type. BTW besides the bearings the carb was also bad on this puppy.[:'(] I might go for another reconditioned saw, but not just a powerhead like I did this time.;)

Is MTP4986 a Poulan p/n? The small engine shop I'm trying to work with only lists the bearing and seal as 2 separate pieces. My crankcase #'s are 530-049-794 & 3254. Is there a web-site where I can order these parts direct ?

Should be able to get the brgs. and seals from a local brg supplier as they are universal, not particularly made for poulan, at a better price. Just take them in and they can match them by size.

The Poulan part #'s are
530056363 for the one piece brg and seal


530016147 for the seperate brg.
530019170 for the seal

I'm quite sure the bearing is a std. size, but I've never seen a seal like the one used in this application.
Tauri Flyer, if 530016147 and 530019170 are assembled, are they the same as 530056363, or are they for the other engines?

Both brgs. are for the Poulan 46,,,However there are several versions of this motor and the two styles are NOT interchangeable. If your motor came with the one piece style then that's what you'll need. I took mine to a local bearing supplier and while he had bearings of that size he couldn't hook me up with anything that was sealed in quite the same way.
Getting the bearing isn't the problem,,it's the seals.

I got in touch with the Poulan customer support desk and determined that my engine was from a 2775 saw, not a 2750 as I thought. With some digging, using the #'s on the crankcase, they determined that I had a 2775. I ordered 2 @ $8.75 each, plus shipping. Should be here in a few days. 530056363 was the correct p/n for my particular case.

All better now. No shaft play at all. I just now did a test run and got 7000 rpm on a Menz 20-10 prop. Cool damp morning, 60 degrees and 80% humidity. Does this sound pretty good ??

7000 rpm on a 20X10 is just about right from what I've seen. :D
