Which Engine Should I Use???
Ok I have been doing some reading on the chainsaw conversion stuff. I did a quick run through the garages and spotted 4 engines that seem like they could work. So here is the list:
- Craftsman 2.0/14" Chainsaw. The flywheel or starter thingy says Phelon 9 on it and thats about the only info I could find on the thing. It is pretty much stripped down but there is still a lot of extra plastic crap to remove. It looks like the carb bolts directly onto the side of the engine so that simplifies the conversion I think.---Just thought of something, the 2.0 probaly means 2ci, so that puts it at about 33cc I think. - Powerlite PL4 Chainsaw. Old, Nasty, Heavy...Just picked it up from neighbor a week or two ago and haven't done anything with it yet. - Toro S140 Snowblower. Old walk behind type blower. Engine looks pretty good, kinda dusty but good. Looks like it could be pretty lightweight and is also fairly compact. Also just picked up from neighbor after he finished trying to snowblow the driveway last week. Heavy snow was too much for the old engine so he bought a new one and I got this one :) - Pioneer 28 Chainsaw. Pretty much all stripped down but still pretty dang heavy. We used it on a old scooter last summer so it runs pretty good and has power but not sure if it is too heavy. I am not 100% sure what it is going on as of now but I will pry build it myself based on how much thrust the engine can put out. Right now I am planning on a big SPAD but who knows what I'll come up with once the conversion is complete. All the engines are OLD and kinda nasty but that all start and run pretty smooth. I wasn't able to find much info on any of the engines, which is annoying, but I am hoping someone here has some experiance with one of them. I will also be going to ALL thrift sales/garage sales this summer looking for bigger (35cc+) for future projects. Also sorry about the vagueness of the engines, if there are ANY details you are looking for tell me and I'll do what I can to get you the info. Thanks ahead of time. I know I'll be posting a lot in the coming months because I'll get stumped somewhere for sure. Thanks |
RE: Which Engine Should I Use???
Being that aircraft need lift to be useful, I would find a balance between weight, size and piston/cylinder condition. Likely, the first consideration would be weight, second condition and third size. Of course it would have to be your ultimate decision, but thats how I'd go about it. If none of these fit the bill, it never hurts to go to your local lawnmower repair shop. They always have scrappers lying around that still have a good engine in them. I have a shop I go to who will have at least 15 running weedwhackers in the basement they will sell for 10 to 20 dollars. In the end, the last thing you want is to be frustrated with your airplane's flight charactaristics all because you were too excited to get it into the air.[:@] Take your time and find what you want. A bit of shopping around will be worth it!
Good luck! |
RE: Which Engine Should I Use???
Thats a good idea, one of our club members owns a lil repair shop so I'll drive up there after school tomorrow and see what he has available. My goal is to find a Ryobi because from what I have heard they are good engines to mess with. Thanks for the tip
