? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
1 Attachment(s)
Ralph, I am building a Ultra Stick Lite and bought a SAITO 180. When I installed the motor mounts included in the kit for the SAITO and the muffler I found it weighs 40 OZ. I think I read in some thread somewhere that your G26 is 40 oz. I don't know if that is with muffler, battery and switch? Will your G26 mount to direct to the firewall of the Ultra Stick lite without a mount. How does your G26 compare in performance with the big Saito? I still might order one from you someday, especially after seeing the weight of the big SAITO.

40 opz without the muffler and battery, less than 3 lbs with both..You can take the plate off the back and use three 5m,m by.8 pitch allens to bolt the engine to the firewall from the back..I haven't tested a 180 with my 18-6 Mejzlik so I can't directly compare performance..I get 9000 rpm with a lightweight Abell muffler....

RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
SOOOOO roughly 48 oz plus 10 oz of fuel, 58oz., ready for take off, with the G26 conversion.
And 40oz plus 16oz of fuel, 56oz., ready for take off, with the big SAITO. I suppose in the real world you would need 20 oz. of fuel in the SAITO to equal the same flight time of 10 oz. in the G26 conversion. When I get tired of buying glow fuel, how long would I have to wait to get a G26 conversion? Ron |
RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
if you toss the mount like Ralph said then you lose 4-5 oz.
i don't know if the saito needs an on-board glow system but that also adds weight and with the smaller fuel tank for the gasser you might come out quite a bit lighter than the saito that's what happens when you hang out in the glow engine forum:D dave |

ORIGINAL: ZAGNUT that's what happens when you hang out in the glow engine forum:D dave Yeah well, I didn't "actually" buy the SAITO. A guy owed me some money and offered the NIB SAITO instead. I thought it was the only chance to get anything from him. Ron |
RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
I don't own a Saito 150 or 180, but I seem to recall that the 150 shakes quite a bit over 9000 RPM. Perhaps this is true for the 180 as well. If this is the case, the G26 should offer lower vibration levels for longer airframe and radio life. [8D]

RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
I have a 150 in a SIG CAP that I fly, and I have not noticed that it shakes bad at all.
Longgevity does not seem to be a problem with me.[>:][>:] Ron |

2 days after you send me a G26...

A 26 made for glow would weigh about 32 oz with a muffler....:D

Ron,
I am quoting from page 112 of Clarence Lee's review of the Saito FA-150S in RCM: "When propped to turn 9,000 RPM or below, the engine's vibration level was no higher than any of the other 120 displacement size engines we have reviewed to date; however, when propped to turn much over 9,000 RPM the vibration level became quite noticeable, even on our solid test mount." No problem with longevity here either. Bruce |

RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
The Saito would not require on board glow power even if mounted inverted.

A glow G26 uses a glow plug. A rimfire plug is for ignition...
A glow G26 can be completely stripped of all ignition components and the case and cylinder lightened..Cut the rear crankshaft flush with the bearing and press a plug into the case instead of the crank seal...Use the old G23 style hub....There are mounting lugs on the front of the case that don't do anything, and the case can be cut off on the back flush with the cylinder....A glow G23 has a lighter cylinder than the G26 and weighs 1 1/2 lbs, turns the 18-6 about 8000 rpm....I have made three like this...You can't buy either made like of this from Horizon, don't know why......The photo is a 2 1/2 lb gas G26.. 928 635 2455 |
RE: ? for RCIGN about G26 conversion weight
OK, I follow what you are saying now. I had thought that for some reason a G26 glow converted to your ignition was a lot lighter than a gasser that had been converted. I did not understand why a G26 Glow converted would be so much lighter. and maybe the Rim Fire plug was one reason for it. I have used some Rim Fire plugs in some conversions before and I can't seem to get a very long life out of them.
Anyway I will give you a call. Ron |
