DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

I just searched for "4 stroke" and found 15 different threads. I'm sure "4-stroke" or "4 cycle" would yield even more. It gets old having people ask the same questions over and over and over and over and over. All they have to do is look for it. There's a TON of information on almost every type of engine out there, it's just people are too lazy to spend time looking.

I'll take a deep breath now.

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

Well, I agree to a point. It can be aggravating, but here's another slant. Sometimes I will remember that we talked about something at some point in the past, and so I'll go searching for it. Maybe, an hour later I'll find it. Why? Because I live in the country and all I can get is a dial up connection, and it is never faster than 24,000 Bps. It's pathetic; I had a 56,000 Bps in Mexico, and high speed connections were available. So now everyone assumes you have a high speed connection, and the pages are so full of advertising and those "cute" little applets that take forever to load. Makes surfing, or finding the answer to a question a *****!! So, sometimes I "take heart" on these guys, and shoot them an answer anyway because I can identify with the hassle of finding the answer yourself sometimes.

Just my opinion,
(Yes, I know, I can buy the "no advertising" version of RCU, but I'm trying to talk myself into paying for a satellite system instead so I can join the rest of the high speed internet world.)

This topic has been covered many times- But you apparently didn't search for it before posting this thread..:D

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

Well, let's not beat on Doug too much here. I will have to agree with him to a certain degree as well. I have seen people post a question that if they had only scanned down half a page or so, they would have seen a very similar topic just discussed a shortwhile ago. The RCU search function is often times flaky, BUT..., I have on several occasions responded to a new question by going back to do a search for another thread in which I had answered a similar question, found the thread, and then post the URL to the old thread as my answer. It sure saves me a lot of time typing the same old thing again. Now, if I could find my own post in 2mins, I would think somebody else could find it in 5mins, no?

Having said that, if I don't feel like answering the same question repeatedly, I just don't. Either somebody else will jump in, or the new poster will go do a search after getting few responses. None of us are paid to answer questions here, so participation is strictly voluntary.

I am not trying (in any way) to beat up on Doug.

I was just trying to be funny- I also agree (inpart) with Doug. But I just go to to my previous post and do some copy and pasting.....:D

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

This is my point.

I went yesterday to find my Funtana thread, which I haven't posted on in a while, and the first search after 5-6 seconds of searching turned it up. That is with BASIC DSL. I'm sure dial up would have taken 15-20 seconds. Whoop Dee Doo.

I just went through the last 3 pages of this forum and the number of times each major trimmer brand was named in the thread title follows. Anyone wanting to look up info on these engines has a lot of reading to do just in the last three pages updated threads, let alone a complete search. I maintain that people (most) don't want to spend the time to read about something and search for it, but would rather have someone spoon feed them.

Times mentioned in thread title in last three pages:

Homelite = 16
Ryobi = 15
Poulan = 3
Mac. = 2

I think this shows the mentality of many Americans as a whole; they don't want to put much effort forth to get what they want immediately.

The first thing I do when going to a new site or finding info on a new aspect of this site is multiple searches. I usually have to spend at least an hour wading through threads but with a lot of reading many of my "dumb" questions are answered.

Call me bitter or whatever, but that's what I see.

Doug

Well,I just did a search on "4 stroke" and get 50 results.None of them had ANYTHING to do with trimmer engine conversion.In fact I didn't see anything related to to "4 stroke" engines. There was a nice discussion about"Burning Glow Plugs" though.

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

Do you know Why there's a wealth of info here on RCU?
Precisely because most people don't search for things.

What would you have them do? Find the first thread, and decide that there is no
other useful information about the subject? Yes, it "can" be annoying, to those who
have answered the same questions over and over. It's still just part of the game.
It's also the very method by which message boards (and usenet groups) thrive.

Make it all into a FAQ, and you may as well have a static webpage, instead of forums ;)

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

KB,

You apparently didn't hit enter when you typed in 4 stroke. I just did that search and got 13 threads. Three were all about the Ryobi 26cc 4-stroke, two were about the Honda GX series, one was about the Shindaiwa, and one was a general thread. As you pointed out, there were 4 (not 50) threads having nothing to do with 4-stroke trimmer conversions.

I also know there are many more threads here about the Ryobi as I've participated in and started numerous ones.

C Watkins,

What I would have them do is decide what information they are looking for. Try a few searches relating to the brand of engine and read the ones that apply. Many people have weighed in about most every topic or problem. You are correct, there is a wealth of information on RCU, but most of it is in numerous, redundant places already.

Enough of my venting. I just hate to see people ask if a particular engine is flyable and someone else say "no" without knowing what they are talking about. A little research would give them the answer.

I hate being negative so that's it for me

Doug

RE: DOES ANYBODY DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING???????

using the search function can be a pain! search the whole forum and you'll come up with threads about 4-strokes on cars, YS vs. saito flame fests...anything but gas conversions. then if you search a specific forum you have to remember to set the "show topics from" box to "all topics" instead of "30 days"...

i'm willing to bet that just about every problem that could arise with rc equipment has been solved ten times already on this forum. but sometimes the person asking the question just wants his problem in his very own thread or maybe just does'nt realize that his problem is the same as the one that's just been solved in the thread below.

also this site is mainly supported by advertising so the more posts the merrier:D if a new guy would simply find what he wants in a search he would have no need to sign up, less members=less traffic=less ad dollars

Since this post came after my post, I think
that you may be speaking directly to me.
1) I did do research to find some answers.
2) Thanks a million to Peter and Aero Nut
for some positive feed back and help
in a most friendly manner.
3) I found this site only by entering
"weedeater conversions."
4) Doug T, it's been a long hot summer,
maybe you need a break.

It can be annoying, but FWIW I also have unintentionally found some great information on the dozens of threads that pop up when I have done a search... It has also made me more adept at refining my search techniques ;)

Cheers!

You mean, like this:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/faq.asp

or like this:

[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/faq.asp]RCU FAQ[/link]

The former is typed (or cut and pasted) into the post directly as is. The latter is done by clicking on the "link" button directly above the box where you typed in your post.

See how great it is sometimes when people dont search. look thru this one thread and see all the information that that might not otherwise have been posted. one idea or comment even off topic might help someone. many times good information is where you find it [8D]
