Poulan

Has anyone did a conv. on a Poulan approx. 40cc chainsaw? I just did and am quite dissapointed.I already had this engine so no money was spent at least. It is an older light green color, unfortunately i don't know model number.I know it's about 40cc as i tore it down to do case lightning and piston is slightly smaller than my q42 spare piston and stroke appears the same"not very scientific I know" anyway the reed valve was slightly rusty as it had been left in a building with no carb on it and as a result i can't get a real good seal on it .I tested it by blowing both ways thru it and it definately leaks quite a bit.Iwas able to help it a little but even with that about the best i can get with a 18x10 Dyna is about 6200 RPM's , my old q35'S will do better than that.It idles good but does'nt transition well.Should i give up or look for another problem? Also how much are those fins hurting me on flywheel? Thanks

Maybe if you run it a hour or so, the reed valve mating surfaces will shine up some and seat better? Might adjust the carb some to get the transition better?

Enjoy,

Jim

What carb are you using ?

RE: Poulan

I don't have the carb that came with it so i've tried 2 different one's both Tillotson's.The one is huge came odd a old pioneer chainsaw probably about 60 or 65cc size ,that engine ran fine with that carb so i at least knew it was good. The second one I tried is about the size that's on my Q 42.I think before giving up I'll try a known working carb off my Q42 it's a Walbro,What do you think?

The Q42 Walbro carb is probably a better match for it. May as well try it and post us some numbers.

it must be a very old poulan with reed valve i have done some of those and none of them turned up i thought it was the longer stroke might be wrong about it my opinion is all plus the crank weighs a ton

Ken I think it is an old one however crank is very simular to Q35 crank so it's not all that beefy. The whole shootin match weighs in at 4lbs.6oz. or about the same as a Quadra. This thing leaks so badly from reed valve it started spitting so bad out the carb it darned near drowned it'self. The most I've gotten so far with a 18x10 Dyna is 6300.Hey Ken i bought some Ryobi mounts and muffs from you and I'm very pleased if I can get this think straitened out can you make a muff off of the original one? Later dude
