How much can I trim off Homie 25 fins??

I've got a couple of Homelite 25 cc engines kicking around, waiting for airframes to go into....anyway, looking at these engines, there seems to be WAY more cooling fin area than what would be required for their new vocation. How much can be safely trimmed off the cylinder fins?
Thanks,
Xvz12

RE: How much can I trim off Homie 25 fins??

I am doing a couple Homelites right now myself.I took a good look at the head,i would love to carve a few of those fins off myself.Looks like the top 5 fins are the only ones you can really do some damage to.Doesn't look like you would lose much weight there, though.I did some major hacking on the lower end though, took everything off except for the mag brace for now.Looks like the lower end is the place to take weight off this engine. If i can afford it i am going to convert to an electronic ignition and trim a whole lot more off the bottom case.I will post some pictures of my Ryobi and Homelite conversions(Hacksaw Masacre!hehe)tomorow night, might help you out some.

Hello all,

I don't know about the homies but I run a Mac -28cc with trimmed fins without issues. The engine is not cowled.

I don't think there is much weight saving but I think it looks "Neater"

This is my first Homie 25 conversion. It lost a little weight. Mostly cosmetic till the coil and rotor came off.

Hi Mike,

For some reason the pictures are blurry when you click on them and they blow up, but nice work! I've thought of detailing my Homies like this, but haven't taken the patience to do so yet.

Yeah, blame the photographer. Still learning all the features...;)

Hi Mike,

I'm now doing my 30cc Homelite like you did your 25cc. Man, that's a bunch of work! I thought for a fleeting moment that I would try to out do you and actually polish mine too, but luckily that moment passed and I came to my senses.

It sure does look lighter, more compact, and more aerodynamic cut down like that doesn't it? :)

Hopefully soon I'll finish it and post pics and numbers.

Take care,
AV8TOR

No polish; just used some 3m abrasive Roloc pads after the hole saw and dremel soft metal tool.
Those 4 rounded areas on case could taper back....
Next 'exhaust deflector' will have downtube aft. Just an experiment with square tubing and rivets.

I have seen fins drilled with about a 1/3- 3/16 drill. Do it in a pattern and it will look neat. Good luck .......Capt,n
