Anyone have good luck with putting a Ryobi 31cc conversion into a GSP 72" Katana??

I have read were others have. If so can y'all share some tricks of the trade and perhaps some pics or video??

It will fly the plane but not in 3D fashion. It does not have enough power.

Hey Kswanson,
I also have a Katana that has an Ryobi on it. I have attampted to fly it and ripped the landing gear out twice. The Ryobi engine does not have great power and the best prop to use is an APC 16x12 and you must tach 7900-8000 rpm or dont even atemp to fly. I did with a APC 17x6 and 18x6 and it was not enough pull and I ripped the gear on a aborted take off. I have flown a 72" CAP 232 with the 16x12 and take offs are gentle but controlably just dont try and force the plane up beyond a 45 degree angle. Once at a safe altitudue the engine and CAP 232 flew very scale. I will fly the Katana next week and let you know how it went. Keep me posted on your adventures in the air.

all depends on the wingloading which for this plane is not a whole lot 992 square inches for that you would have to keep the plane down to 9 lbs, final flying weight of that plane 11 - 11.5 pounds. you are at that weight talking about 26.6 oz per square inch. which seems a bit high. itll fly allright :eek:. maybe someone else can tell you better.

Hey Guys,
I flew the Katana with the Ryobi finally with an APC 16x12 turning 7800-7900 rpm. When the tail came up at 1/2 throttle only 50ft of runway I new that I was good on the power side. I gently climbed to a safe altitude and trimmed out at 3/4 throttle. The plane did not want to slow down, so I full throttled it and pointed it straight up. I was truly surprised it climbed straight up.

I replaced the wing springs with heavy duty Zip Ties so I dared to test them with some slow spins and their were no issues. I idled back to see how slow I could go and the plane almost crawled into the wind I brought Her in a little hot because I was not yet use to landing Her. I actually had to put her own the runway and get into the grass to stop it.

I adjusted the low end because at idle the engine stopped after landing. Big mistake, because I dead stick shortly after take off and not being comfortable with the planes glide I came in hot and broke off the landing gear again, but no other damage to the plane. I fixed the gear and I am ready to fly again.

I am not a 3D flyer I just Love to fly so I am cool with the results for now. The plane is under powered which we all will need that power at some point, but when air borne you it does not fly like it is. Very smooth and scale flying. My next flight I plan test its’ aerobic ability with this engine.
