professional home build ignition new update

just for a quick background i am a electronic engineering student and my father inlaw is a electronic engineer for the last 30 years. i dont like to bug him to much so instead of building a programable ignition a am going to build one out of semicoductors. i have a31cc ryobi engine that i am converting for a airplane. the homemade ignitions are not that great so i did some digging around and found that the off the shelf one are way to much money. ST semiconductor has three electronic ingnition controllers that have a lot of cool adjustal features. the three i am looking at are the L497, L482, L484. they use little outside parts and require a coil. i can mail anyone the pfd files if they leave there email. if anyone is interesed in helping out it would make this go a lot faster. i have all of the software to build the boards and inport and export different file types to sharing files will be very easy. i can either make the pcb's by my self or have a local company make them. cost for the final ignition will be around 6-10 bucks plus a coil (2-5 bucks used and all the way up for brand new one) and board will only cost 1-3bucks. i can make small amounts of boards for a few dollars each. if there are a lot of people we can have my made professionally for the same price. if any one has question please post them here so we can all keep track of where we are at. sorry fro my gramer and spelling. thanks

RH, Whilst I cant help you on this, I am very interested in your project, please keep this post updated, I could help in testing and if schematics are available I can get it built by a friend to test on a few different gas engines...good luck
p.s. is this intended for sale or as open source?

this is intended to be open source as long as everyone will pitch in. if you leave your email i will send over the pfd files.

will these ignitions handle 20,000 rpm? and can you back off the advance at will.
basically what i need is a couple degrees retard at start then pull 30deg or so then near 18,000 back off advance a couple degrees. this is for a gas zenoah/sikk engines in a boat application

I have a Ryobi and am interested in following the progress. Current plans were to leave the magneto on the engine for simplicity. The cost/benefit of electronic ignition always seemed questionable considering the ignition ends up costing twice as much as the engine and adds operational complexity.

In the past I have wire wrapped circuits for experimental purposes.

This guy posted this twice and people have replied to both posts. One was moved here from another forum. If you are intested in the other post which has been locked up, click on the following link...

everyone be advised that the ST Micro chips are kettering type circuits, NOT capacitive discharge....

everyone be advised that the ST Micro chips are kettering type circuits, NOT capacitive discharge....

[:-]

true but they still look a whole lot better than all the other homebrew kettering ignitions out there, especially the hall effect triggered one. nice control of dwell time without the need for multiple magnets...

three electronic ingnition controllers that have a lot of cool adjustal features
but still no way to control timing. this would require a microcontroller or maybe you could try the [link=http://rocky.digikey.com/WebLib/On-Semi/Web%20Data/MC14536B-D.pdf]MC14536B[/link] this is the IC used for timing in the 3W ignitions.

FenceMagnet has pointed out that these chips are are for Kettering type ignition circuits, assuming that he is correct (I didn't check myself) have you decided whether or not you plan on removing the flywheels for your ignition conversions. I think that most engines will run smoother with their flywheels than without them, even with their weight of about 8 ounces.

An ignition design that uses the flywheel's built in magnet and possibly can add a bit of electronic wizardry for ignition retard/advance to enhance low and high RPM operation would be attractive in its own right as an economic ignition system for these gas engine conversions. I am interested in following this thread myself. What do you think about my comments? Anyone else with comments.

I think you will find that Stihl blower engines retard timing during starting. And they also don’t produce a spark below 600 RPM for safety reasons, which probably prohibits hand cranking.

Engines are designed for dynamic balance with the flywheel and generally removing the flywheel produces unwanted vibration at some speed. My preference is to use the flywheel and also the coil if possible. However I have a very powerful 069-saw engine that I would like to install electronic ignition and use the flywheel magnet.

do to the huge response i am going to put up the pfd files on a website. they will be up in a few days. I think a am going to go a different route now.

I talked to my father in-law and he said that if there was enough interest he will build I cdi ignition that will have a ton of features and also be able to buy just the microprossers and put it together you self with a free schematic or buy a complete unit.
there will be at least 4-5 versions. I am going to list all of the different features that can be added to the standard cdi ignition.

programable advance and retard at low, mid(from hand held programer only), and high points. you will be able to use a hand held programmer or use a extra receiver channel and do in-flight adjustments.

engine kill from extra receiver channel

all of these features use hand held programmer with a lcd display
real time tach
tach memory of low and high readings from flights
glitch counter
battery voltages low and high from flights
rev limiter
and any other features you want

the main reason for the change is that last year he started on a governor with all of the build in features and also the hand held programmer so it will be make delivery time a lot sooner. The hand help programer is build and the ignition brain is build so just a program need to be written.

if you just want a simple cdi ignition chip that is no problem it wont cost to much. if you want a complete setup with the hand help programer I will have the prices in a few weeks. one hand held programmer will work on any of the main ignition brains so one group of people could all use the same hand held programer.

please list what you are interested in so a can get a rough count. my father in-law will only put in the time if there is a demand. like I said before if you just want a simple cdi ignition he can write the program and sell you the single chip for a few bucks and you can out it all together for around 20-30 bucks.

raptorhelis

I don't know much about electronics so this may be a dumb question, but with the other cdi units you are advised not to have any rc gear near the cdi or any of its wires due to rfi, so won't pluging it into your rx cause trouble?

raptorhelis,

I am interested in the whole setup. Do you want a reply on your web site or on this thread?

Thanks,

website problem fix. the st chips are signal prossesers that can be used with a cimple cdi ingition or Kettering ignitions. cdi igntions are simple to make are they still use a transformer to up the voltage they just add a capasitor to help give the ignition a extra boost. you can wind your own coil for a cdi ignition and it only costed a few bucks. the other componets used are a few bucks to. what the st chip dose it make sure that you get the hostest spark each time it fires. i will have a full set of plans in a few days for the st chip. if you want a standard pre-programmed microprosser to use with a simple cdi i should have that i a few weeks. thanks and keep asking questions.

I am now confused, do you just intend selling bits or do you intend to publish the full details for others to construct?

i dont know how to program yet but i do know how to build and design circuit boards using everything but I still can program a microprocessor . if everyone wants to help out we can build a simple electronic ignition for free. if we need to build a ignition with a microprocessor than my fatherin-law is going to charge me to do the programming so then it is going to cost everyone a few bucks. or i end up doing all of the work myself i am going to charge everyone a few bucks. doing all of the research and build a circuit board on a cad program will take at least 15-20 hours off hard work plus making the board after it has been designed cost money. there is the chemicals to process the board and the copper boards them self cost money. so what i need to know is how many people can help out and also can everyone process there own boards if there are given the circuit board files. sorry for the confusion. please ask me more questions and lets get this ball rolling.

ps. are there any programmers out there that would be willing to help out?
