Poulan 46 prop sizes
What size props are you guys running on your Poulan 46? I am looking at the MenzS 20x8 and 20x10. Are those going to get it running in the best rpm range? which would be better? I am limited to 20" prop to be sure I have 3" clearance.

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
I just did I Poulan 46 conversion that I tried selling on Ebay. I am using a JTec muffler on it and with the new ring I put in it still breaking in, I get 7800 from a 20x8 black MA and 6900 from a 20x10 black MA. From what I have read I may get 100 to 200 more rpms from the engine when the ring finally breaks in.

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
So is 7000 the rpm to aim for with this engine?

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
Anthony,
I used the Pro Zinger 20-8 at first, the tried the MSC 20-8. That prop and engine combo was a good fit. The MSC 20-8 is a wide blade unit too, and doesn't turn the rpm some do, but the PULL is there and its pretty quiet. Glad you got past the carb twister plate. Now you are an expert! Roger |
RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
Thanks for the phenolic Roger! I was able to make it and get it attached. I did not turn it down, but cut it to the shape needed and followed the instructions on the rest. I have ran it with a APC 19x8W that I had on my G38 that is on my Spacewalker. The Poulan 46 has a lot more power than the G38. I have a MenzS 20x8 and 20x10 on order. A flying buddy just got a Moki 2.10 and he will be trying the same props on it. We will see which prop is better for each engine. I will post some tach numbers once I get them.

Anthony: Did you get those numbers yet? Thanks Capt,n:D

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
I have not had a chance to tach either engine. I should have some time to do it over Christmas time off. My buddy has not ran his Moki yet, and he may not run it until early spring. I will try to get him to run it over the holidays though. I have a G38 that I can run it against.

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
I finally ran the Poulan 46cc with the MenzS 20x8. I got 7200 out of it with a conservative mixture on the high needle. It idled at 1800 smoothly. I am happy with the results so far. I expect they will get better when it breaks in a bit. I am running 50:1 Stihl oil. The Stihl dealer recommends it, and I have ran it in all of my Stihl yard equipment for years without problem.

Anthony,
Everything appears right on for many hours of enjoyment. It'll get better and better for the next few hours running. Jim |
RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
w8ye: How close is the power output of the Poulan 46cc compared to the Homlite 45cc chainsaw engine? Thanks Capt,n

RE: Poulan 46 prop sizes
I have two Homelite 45 timberman 20/18" saws. The latest all red style and the one just before it with the Black top. I havn't needed a model engine this size yet so they are both saws. So I cannot tell you the rpms for sure.
Back about three years ago when people first started doing these, there wasn't enough difference between a Homelite 45 and Poulan 46 to say which one was better? I also have a like new 60 cc 22" 3750 Poulan that's still a saw. As well as two 32 Macs and a 38 Mac and a dozen weed whackers I have several acres of trees. The saws come in handy. I have four other converted engines in the 30-32 cc size so I not hurting for engines. Jim |
