Stihl FS61

Anyone have any idea what size this engine is? Got it from my Dad... about 20 years old and never been run hard. I am having tremendous trouble location specifications for this unit. Just wondering if it would have decent power for it's size and weight or should I just leave the string attached. Thanks.

take plug and exhaust off.then use popsicle stick and measure bore by sticking in exhaust and tapping piston against stick then measure in mm.then measure stroke as close as possible in mms.then post results.either myself or someone else will tell you results or i will do the math then post it so you can see how its done.

What does the statement above mean?

What I meant was that the Stihl FS61 trimmer was bought new by my Dad over 20 years ago and only used on his own yard once every few weeks during the growing season... it is a low time, light usage condition use motor. Question is... what size and power is it and is it worth considering for a conversion.

While I don’t know the size of the engine, the largest current two-stroke trimmer is 31cc (someone correct me if wrong). Twenty years ago trimmers were smaller displacement and in the 20 to 25cc range. Usually the ignition was magneto points.

As a cost reference a new refurbished Ryobi trimmer from harbor freight is about $60. You don’t have much to lose by taking it apart.

RE: Stihl FS61

I have heard allot of people talking about Ryobi engines from Harbor Freight. I checked with them and they have stopped selling them. Does anyone know a good source for used or rebuilt engines?
I have called my local lawn mower repair shops and they gave me some junkers for free or next to nothing, but they all need major work or are thet wrong configuration.

Where else can I get cheap deals or go factory direct?

I also have a poll question...
What is your favorite brand engine to use if you had your choice? Ryobi, Stihl, Echo, Homelite, Other?
