ignition timing
 

I don't have a timing light so I was wondering if someone could tell me at what point the flywheel mags and coil are when the spark is released. Is it say 1/8 of an inch after the mags pass the alignment of the two coil legs or is it when the second mag passes the second leg in the rotation. I know this could be easily answered with some reference marks on the fly wheel and a pointer,but like I said, I don't have one.The reason I ask is I have an old 80cc that I 'am modding to fit my sons' pocket bike. The engine had points and I'am replacing with solid state so the timing can be advanced.BTW whats the difference between the solid state and the points coil? They look the same on the outside .

I ask a similar question and of course a timing light will tell you but it is more fun to figure it out. It looks like to me that the fire point is going to be just as the magnets leave the poles. That is the peak magnet circuit and the point it is broken and the field collapses would be the spark point. My 2 cents worth.
