weedie and cheap plane
I was wondering if anyone has put a ryobi on a cheap plane. I did some looking and couldn't really find anything other then big pink which looks too involved for me. I was wondering about a cross between a spad and a foam plane. Maybe something built on a rail.
A giant rail plane woulf be fun and CHEAP... gpshemi |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
Having recently lost my Ultra Lite Stick 120, I did a somewhat extensive search to find another good "knock around" and cheap, plane. I decided on the Great Planes Giant Big Stick, and a Ryobi would work very well on that plane. The price through Tower Hobbies is $249.00, but they always have 20 to 30 dollar discounts, and shipping is only $7.00. So for $226.00, I got a complete ARF plane very suitable for a gas conversion engine, that flies well, is easy to assemble etc., and includes everything from the gas tank to the wheels and everything!
If you start adding up costs like materials, glue, wheels, tires, gas tank, covering, paint, and everything necessary to throw a plane together, $226.00 for a large scale plane starts looking like a great deal!! Besides that, there is very little labor involved, and you're out flying! Just my thoughts, AV8TOR |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
Fair enough. Why did you not get another Ultra Lite Stick 120? I see they are the same price - $249.
This would be my first weedie. I was hoping to have a lazy cheap flyer that maybe I could swap floats back and forth on. What's you're thoughts on that? Thanks, gpshemi |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
I liked the looks of the Giant Big Stik better, and it is larger. The wing is 5" longer, and has a lot more area. The Ultra Lite Stick 120 was a good flier however.
Sure, I would think floats would be no problem. AV8TOR |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
I think I made up my mind then. I can't refuse trying out a weedie. I've got a weedie 55" scarab, and an FG Monster Truck with a G26 in it. Only makes sense to add a weedie plane to my collection. I like my Aerobird and Typhoon, but the roar of gas is what makes my day.

Go for it! You won't be sorry! It gave me a whole new interest in the hobby when I started doing these gas conversion planes several years ago. It's great. Now I only have one glow plane left in my "Air Force". I love the sound, the no mess on the airplane, the performance, the self satisfaction of doing the engine conversion, and almost best of all, the look on peoples faces when I tell them where the engine came from!
I don't know if you are familiar with Great Planes products, but they are very good quality and have great instructions if you need them... Here's a pic of my recently completed Great Planes Fokker triplane with a 23.6cc Echo leaf blower engine. Good luck, AV8TOR |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
Just take up a buncha room is all.
I assume you'll all help me along with getting it set up. 8-) thanks, gpshemi |

Yep, that's what this forum is for, among other things; like bragging, etc.... :)

Didn't you have a Tiger Moth under construction at one time? Was it this one? http://www.nitroplanes.com/timo12076arf.html Wing span: 76in / 1930mm Wing area: 1830sq in / 118 sq dm Flying weight: 9.0lb / 4086g Fuselage length: 65.5 in / 1664 mm Engine Required: 4c 1.40cu in (ABOUT 30 OZ.) Radio Required: 4 channels,5 servos |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
Hi,
Yes, I have a Tiger Moth that I haven't put together yet, but that's not it. Mine is from Dymond Models and has a 72" wingspan. The one on the site you mentioned looks nice and it's a great price however. The only thing I like better about mine is that it has four ailerons. That isn't scale, but that doesn't matter to me... RE: weedie and cheap plane
Boy...that sure is a good price. The Ultimate 1.20 looks good too!!!

Floats no problem with a 90" wing |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
Looks like a nice alternative, but GP's stik is only $256 inc shipping at Tower.
$20-$30 less that if you have a coupon. You can pretty much bet on $236 out the door. That's $100 cheaper. gpshemi |
RE: weedie and cheap plane
well converts I bought the nitro planes 120 ultimate bipe, is very light and I am going to put a 25cc weadeater ultra which I modified the timing duration for both the admission and exhaust, before the hop up I was getting 8100 rpm on a MA 15x8 so I think that with the longer duration(135 for admission and 150 for exhaust) I'll be getting higher rpm's but I think that's going to be a great combination I will let you know later about the results once I buy the radio gear necesary to complete.
