Converting a fly wheel to Electronic Ignition

I went to BCMA home page and see that they have a CDI Auto Advance Electronic Ignition for 85 bucks.. I like that.... I talk to him on the phone and said that I can put this on any gas engine.. I have a us 35 I want to put it on but I need make the fly wheel work with it.. I need some good ideas on how to do this.. I do not have a lath or know were one is at.. and I need to know were I can get a magnet that I can put in the fly wheel...

Thanks
Paul

RE: Converting a fly wheel to Electronic Ignition

You can cut the flywheel down with a hole saw and then dress it up chucked in a drill, by using correct size bolt as a mandrel. The cut down wheel can then be drilled for a small magnet (radio shak, 1/4x1/8" neodymium) Use the instructions on BCMA site for timing. You will also have to make a mount for hall effect sensor on the engine. I use these CDI units. They are compact and work well. Good luck, red

Yes a flywheel can be cut down. However I don't think it will run true without using a mandrel that has a taper to match the taper in the flywheel. Should be easier to machine a new hub and timing ring. Make a plate to glue the sensor to and use a case bolt to mount it. This way the sensor can be located anywhere and timing is a breeze as the ring rotates 360 degrees and is held in place by a set screw. Check out the Echo 2400 thread and the Lathe For conversions thread. Here is a picture of an Echo 16cc I did showing my work. You will need a plug adapter also to use Adams ignition for the CM-6 plug, CH can sell you a box for about the same money if you want to use the regular plug. Ralph at RC Ignitions can fix you up since you don't have a lathe.
